Presume that’s Tipp after winning Munster? Read somewhere that they went from 1971 to 1987 without even winning a Munster? Mad to think give their pre-eminence of late. Poor underage structures at the time or no luck?

Should have been blasted

Like Cork they fade and come back and go away again

Yeah Tipp were average enough between 2003-2007 when Cork were enjoying a great period. Tables turned then when Liam Sheedy took charge.

Mixture of a few things. Knock out hurling, and a few what could’ve beens (e.g. 1984). They won three all Irelands in a row at u21 (79-81) and another in 85.

1987 was the first season for Babs (he came in after 86 championship). That was indeed a picture from the 1987 replay in Killarney when Richie Stakelum said ‘The Famine is Over’

Yep swings n roundabouts , KK we’re the only team in modern times at a decent level for years, maybe Limerick will have a turn now for 3/4 years

They went ten years without even winning a game.

Informative. That must have been a bleak decade for them. They didn’t even beat Waterford or Clare? Clare had a good team in the late 70’s hadn’t they?

Poor luck for a start, first to lose to Limerick in 1973 when they would have walked the All Ireland. They were blackguarded that day at the end but they should have been out of sight. Then to run into the Cork team of 1975 to 1979 which was a great team. And there was no back door then. And I remember being at the 1984 Munster Final and I still can’t believe how they lost it, but defeat had become a habit by then. They only beat Clare that year because Clare got worse head staggers.

I don’t think there was too much wrong at under age. They won their share of U21s and a smaller share of minors in this period. They had a great win at u21 over Kilkenny in Walsh Park.

I suppose after the golden era of the 50s and 60s expectations were too high. I have a memory of fellas being discarded routinely after one championship defeat and thus there being no continuity or team building.

In fairness they never drew Waterford in the championship until 1983. Waterford only won games in the same 10 years against Kerry.
