There’s been a good start for Ireland at the World Indoor Athletics Championship in Doha, Qatar, this morning with David Gillick through to the semi-finals of the 400 metres this afternoon.
Gillick won his heat, but Brian Gregan is out of the competition after he finished third in his heat, just outside the qualifying places.
Deirdre Ryan is in action later in the women’s high jump qualifying.
Gillick looks like a decent shout for a medal here - had a good time there a few weeks back.
Interesting guy actually, you’d hear him on the radio the odd time and not a cliché or anything out of him, very analytical of himself without getting caught up in it.
Gillick seems a top lad alright. I knew a guy who was on Irish teams with him and said he was a very nice bloke. He does come across well on tv & radio alright.
Gillick is a serious athlete
He made massive strides last summer and is now world class- 6th in the worlds last year and sub 45 was great progress
He loves the indoors and he has the physique for bursting fellows out of the way. Would be nice for him to show well here, a medal would be good followed by one in the summer in Barcelona. Psychologically its most important for him to be able to deal with the expectation that he’ll do well, something irish athletes haven’t handled well in the past.
The goal though is 2012 and there’s still a long way to go from here
Gillick into the final
Second in a slow heat but he did clip Bershawn’s (or however the fuck you spell it) heels at the bell.
I wonder what lane he’ll draw, he needs to be in 3,4 or 5 but I don’t think he’ll make it with his time.
THat Yank is fair fast though for a lad that’s only doing the 400 because there aren’t any hurdles
Great interview by Gillick with Greg Allen yesterday evening on RTE. He was actually disqualified subsequently and the reason he was 5th initially was because he went for a gap on the inside on the home turn and some American cunt stepped across and blocked him and they tangled. They were disputing the silver and bronze medals at the time. The American walked by during the interview and kicked a hoarding and was roaring about Gillick costing him a medal, while Gillick was calling him a fool and said he should ‘go forth and multiply’. The American was 6th in the end then but they appealed and Gillick was disqualified.
Gillick tried run through a gap that wasn’t there. He clashed with the American, ruining both their races. Gillick deserved to be disqualified - Jackson might have won only for him.
