O’Gara quashes retirement talk

Wednesday, September 21, 2011 - 07:01 AM

Ronan O’Gara insists he has no intention of retiring from Test rugby after the World Cup, declaring only “losers” walk away when confronted by a challenge.

The Ireland fly-half suggested in a television interview after Saturday’s stunning 15-6 victory over Australia that his 11-year international career was almost over.

“I’m done with Ireland in a few weeks. I’ve had a great time in this jersey but I want this to be the biggest time,” he told RTE.

O’Gara today clarified his comments by stating that he was referring to the end of the World Cup and not his own position.

The 34-year-old – the oldest member of the squad – has lost his place as first choice fly-half to Leinster’s Jonathan Sexton.

“Retirement has crossed my mind plenty of times over the last few years,” he said.

“There are plenty of thoughts in your head when you’re disappointed but it’s losers who quit when things aren’t going so well for them.

“Retirement hasn’t entered my head seriously in that regard. I’m a fighter and I’ll keep fighting until the end.

“I’m not sure when that is. Playing for Ireland means so much you don’t walk away from the team until it’s right.

“You take advice from people you respect on that front. I’m not at that stage yet.”

O’Gara is adamant the meaning of his words during the interview were misinterpreted.

“On Saturday I was speaking in the context of being done with Ireland in six or seven weeks’ time in terms of this World Cup,” he said.

“I said I’m done with Ireland in a few weeks and there are different interpretations of that.

“It was a great night, one of my best nights. I was so proud to be part of the team.

“From my point of view, when you set goals as a professional player everything ends with the World Cup final.

“That’s where I stand at the minute. It’s important for me to put an end to this because it’s a distraction the team don’t need.

“In my own head I’ll reassess at the end of the World Cup. But I want to be part of this team because it’s a great team at the moment.

“It’s about being part of an Ireland team that will do itself justice in the competition and give the supporters at home something they deserve.”

O’Gara has kicked 1,039 points for Ireland during his 113-cap career

He made his debut in 2000 and has been on three Lions tours, and could yet reclaim the number 10 jersey given Sexton’s unconvincing performances against the United States and Australia so far this month.

went with tonga -5 for a finish up

Brian Cullen will take up a role with the Leinster Academy in the coming days. Great to see him finally break free of DCU.

H’on Tonga to fuck

I hope Tonga make the cunts pay for WWII

3 yellows?

Ah FFS!

could have been more lad, these tongans are a bit wild
(on the pitch)

Ah fuck sake

It’s still only 9 yellows in 21 games so far. It was 5 cards in 19 games.
By the new average you are looking at 20.5 cards.
I had planned on getting out before the knockout stages.

The bookies still reckon the average is going to increase hugely. They have the spread as 28-29.5
I’m gonna treat this as a once off and continue to ride it out until the group stages are over at least.

The margin bet is also going well but the bookies think there are still hammerings to come in an overall sense. There are 7 games left that have the potential to be big margins.
They have the total at 1155-1170. I still expect it to be under 1100.
If we get to the knockout stages and they still have it that high I’d seriously consider doubling down. Knockout games should be clear of hammerings assuming the best teams make it through.

Generally don’t like backing sides on the minus side of big handicaps but have the feeling South Africa will easily run in 10 tries tomorrow against Namibia. Considering they beat a half decent Fiji side by 45 points I would be confident that they will beat the 59 point handicap tomorrow morning as Namibia are muck

Agreed, could be 70- or 80, the saffers have picked a strong side. Hopefully not with the intention of doing a Ger Loughnane on it and ploghing the players into the ground before the Samoa game, training the morning of the match and being beaten into second place in the group.

For all the talk of it I can’t see either the likes of New Zealand or South Africa throwing a game or looking for the soft option. Momentum is absolutely huge for knockout rugby and knowing both countries involved and arrogence of both neither would be ones for taking soft options

I reckon you might be tight on the margins at this stage. Margins at 472 total at moment, I went through rest of pool games and did a rough estimate and came up with 545 additional margin for group stages alone. Problem is Namibia are woeful and have SA and Wales left to play, could be 130 + margin in those games.

Russia are also puke and they have Ireland and Oz, although I doubt Ireland will put on more than 35-40 points the Ozzies could fucking shred them with nothing to play for and the Russians shattered. France and Tonga, NZ and Canada indeed you could see a big win for NZ this weekend also against the French.

Still think you are right in that they probably wont hit the 1100, but doubt there will be much profit in it. Worse case scenario is a couple of massive trouncings which will fuck the bet right up.

Tomorrow will tell a lot. Fingers crossed but Iv backed SA minus the 59.5, and minus 75.5 at 4.7.

South Africa 24-0 up after 32 minutes. Handicap looking good, a another try before half time shoudl make sure of it. They will probably score at will second half as Namibia tire and they add fresh legs from the bench

Ah lovely Fourie with South Africa’s fourth try. Should make it 31-0 at H/T. More than half way to covering the spread

From the limited bit I saw in the first 20 mins, that prick George Clancy was doing his best to keep Namibia in the game.

Fook it anyway, Soot Ifrika have only scored 7 points in the 20 minutes after half time. Need a bog last 20 minutes and 22 points from them

45-0 now chewy

I see that, another quick try and it should be safe. Morne Steyn won’t miss too many conversion attemots either
