Always felt he was an odd signing for City anyway. A casualty of the scatter gun approach taken at times last Summer. Bags of ability. A good deal for him and Bayern.
Boateng has no ability. He is a terrible player. Hopeless full back, cant imagine him being much better in the centre.
He’s certainly much more natural in the centre. He’s not your typical German centre back though but I’d expect him to improve with more games there.
Southgate, Gareth Barry and Dion Dublin were all in squads with him which is what he was referring to.
Gareth Southgate won nearly as many caps for England as Scholes did and nearly all of them were won between 1995 and 2000 when he was a Villa player before moving to Middlesborough in 2001 and could not be accused of what Scholes was on about in his interview
Dion Dublin wasn’t a Villa player when involved in the England set up in the lead up to the 1998 World cup, he played for Coventry and subsequently wasn’t recalled when he moved to Villa
Barry won 4 caps for England betweem 2000 and 2007 and was in the internatioanl wilderness for most of that time so it could hardly be him either

Barry didn’t play for England for four years. Might have been in the squad a few times as a younger player but certainly wasn’t to leave Villa then. Dublin was probably in a few squads but came to Villa towards the end of his career. Certainly wasn’t looking for a move higher up the league. Southgate maybe yeah but he ended up at Boro. Southgate played better in any international tournaments than Scholes, euro 96 when he was excellent. Can’t remember if Scholes was involved.
All in all, Scholes is talking completely through his hole on the players from the Aston Villas and his gutless whining doesn’t reflect well on his character.

Must have been Southgate as he was the only one involved for any prolonged period with the England squad when Scholes was.
Anyhow he said was “— especially players at clubs like your Aston Villas” so he was clearly referring to players at teams outside of the upper echelons angling for a move rather than concentrating on the tournament.
