Christ, but I hated him for a decade, even in his latter years, the sight of him “warming up” with 10 to go in the Hyde or Castlebar was enough for us to shit the togs.
I met him last year or the year before golfing in Athlone and was mightily impressed. As sound as a pound guy you couldn’t meet, banter, stories and tales from the crypt, Tony Mac had them all. No bemoaning of the loss to Kerry, just the pride in wearing the jersey, the camaraderie among Gaels, the great and lesser days all convened into tales of the purest Roscommon folklore, (porter every Sunday). Hard to fault it.
