christ almighty, how bad is club football? i know its the dregs of oirish society that play but did any of you see that miss today:grinning:standing still, ball in hand, a few mitres out and he couldnt kict it over -lol
Tougher championships with relegation a real issue from April/May which has teams preparing very early. Standard has dropped a bit too but i put that down in a big way to very fractured championships that don’t have any flow. It took Nemo 4 games to get going this year after september and werr playing very good football by the end of it. Kerry club championship was very fractured as well.
But there is only arguably 15-20 genuine Senior teams in Munster. Maybe 1/2 in Waterford, nobe really in Clare or Limerick, 4/5 in Cork, 3/4 in Tipp, 10/11 in Kerry.
The depth is gone. There used to be great depth. So it weakens everything.
If there’s poor depth teams shouldn’t have many worries about relegation.
You say there are only 15-20 genuine senior teams in Munster. With those spread out across the counties, that doesn’t tally at all with your statement that the championships in Munster are tougher - it strongly implies they’re easier because there has to be an imbalance between the “genuine senior teams” and those who are senior in name only. And anyway, shouldn’t a tough route improve a team and make them battle hardened? You’ve often said this.
The Derry and Mayo championships, along with Dublin, are probably the toughest in the country. Those counties have an excellent record in the All-Ireland club championship over the last 20-25 years or so.
Dublin teams have to play in a fractured championship. Kilmacud Crokes were out by early May last year. That doesn’t stop Dublin teams from doing well.
Mayo and Derry teams have had a consistent record over those 25 years of being there or thereabouts when the big prize is being handed out.
Munster teams appear to have fallen off a bit of a metaphorical cliff in this regard. Nemo Rangers in 2008 were the last team to make a genuine challenge for the title. Since then the drop off in standards in the province has been noticeable. That may be cyclical but it’s a noticeable trend all the same.
It’s seems to me the Munster club championship is like the Ulster inter county championship. With cross playing the Kerry role in the club championship.
