2017 All Ireland Senior Football Championship

Carlow won two consecutive games in 1996 when they beat Wexford and Wicklow. With a team backboned by Eire Og players, they were given a decent chance by many going in against supposedly one of the worst ever Meath teams. Meath were All Ireland Champions just over three months later.

Carlow haven’t faced Dublin in 29 years since 1988. That must be some sort of a record for counties not meeting in a provincial championship. That 1998 match was played in Dr Cullen Park on the June Bank Holiday Monday. Think it was possibly the first ever Championship game played on a Monday.

I was at that game in 1996. It was fairly sobering. I think Carlow have been to one Leinster semi final since 1944.

Was Bobby training them then?

Yes. Bobby Miller was in charge in 1996.

It’s a long time since Dublin played Wicklow too. 1990 Leinster semi-final in Newbridge. The 1991 League quarter-final was the last competitive match between the two I think.

A thorough gentleman, may he RIP.

Absolutely. Died far too soon. Was only in his mid 50s. A great servant of football in his native Laois and Carlow.

His daughter carries on his legacy.

It’s a little better than that. When they beat Louth in 2011, that got them into their first provincial semi final since 1958. Don’t know what the record was between 1944-58 but I would suspect they made a few. They were reasonably competitive throughout the 40s and 50s and even made a league final in 1954.

Not too many. My father played in the league final in 54 and played all the way up to 1961. My grandfather played on the first Carlow team to win provincial honors, the 1913 JFC

A man from Carlow sorted out my back pain on more than one occasion

Is that yer man who fixes the cattle or horses or whatever?

Danny Nail?

Cattle & Horses have backs too, mate.

Wouldn’t it be easier just to make glue or burgers out of them than have their backshhh fiksssshed?

Was that the vet/chiropractor chappie that some swore at and some swore by ??

Philly McMahon suspended for one game for abusive language to a referee in the National Football League Final.

Now we’ll have to suffer another media campaign tell us what a wonderful young man he really is.

Interesting. I have the match programme from
The 1954 League Final.

It is the mighty danny nail. Also in the queue for treatment the first day was a calf and a dog. And a young lad from cork with mri scans or something  (mr nail wouldn’t have much use for that) ye can smirk away but he performed two miracles on me
