Carlow won two consecutive games in 1996 when they beat Wexford and Wicklow. With a team backboned by Eire Og players, they were given a decent chance by many going in against supposedly one of the worst ever Meath teams. Meath were All Ireland Champions just over three months later.
Carlow havenât faced Dublin in 29 years since 1988. That must be some sort of a record for counties not meeting in a provincial championship. That 1998 match was played in Dr Cullen Park on the June Bank Holiday Monday. Think it was possibly the first ever Championship game played on a Monday.
Itâs a long time since Dublin played Wicklow too. 1990 Leinster semi-final in Newbridge. The 1991 League quarter-final was the last competitive match between the two I think.
Itâs a little better than that. When they beat Louth in 2011, that got them into their first provincial semi final since 1958. Donât know what the record was between 1944-58 but I would suspect they made a few. They were reasonably competitive throughout the 40s and 50s and even made a league final in 1954.
Not too many. My father played in the league final in 54 and played all the way up to 1961. My grandfather played on the first Carlow team to win provincial honors, the 1913 JFC
It is the mighty danny nail. Also in the queue for treatment the first day was a calf and a dog. And a young lad from cork with mri scans or something (mr nail wouldnât have much use for that) ye can smirk away but he performed two miracles on me
