The Leinster first round pairings were made first and then the teams already given a bye to the quarter finals were second out. So all last year’s semi-finalists were out second. I don’t think it necessarily means Carlow or Wexford have a home draw.

The A side of the qualifiers looks tougher next year although there is a better balance between A and B than in previous years.

Section A: Mayo or Galway and Tyrone or Donegal will be there. Laois, Meath, Kildare, Derry and Clare also. Leinster and Munster runners-up await these teams in Round 4.

Section B: The losers of Cork v Tipperary, along with Westmeath and probably Armagh, Cavan and Fermanagh. Ulster and Connacht runners-up await these teams in Round 4.

Wouldn’t be at all shocked if they do. We’re not going anywhere under Carew and we’ve already managed to lose to London in recent years so no reason when NY can’t take us, five more mins v Roscommon last May and they’d have probably done them.

The bottom half of the Ulster draw is hard to call.

Monaghan the best side but half to start from the back, three tricky enough games to negotiate for a final spot. Cavan will have a tough qf and will be going in favourites if they win that so will have the pressure on them. Armagh should get past an atrocious Down side and then should be underdogs against Monaghan/Fermanagh/Cavan so are capable of causing an upset. They might have a few more of the Cross boys this year and Dyas could be back as well.

Five no hopers, none of whom made the last 12 of this year’s championship and only Cavan (courtesy of a win over Carlow) made the last 16.

It is exciting though that at least one of them is guaranteed a last 12 slot. Will the losers be on Side A or B of the draw? They’ll all be praying to avoid Longford, the scourge of Ulster or in Armagh’s case Laois.

Armagh were in the last 8 in 2014.
Cavan were there in 2013, Fermanagh in 2015 and Monaghan in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Last year was the anomaly.
