It’s the third time since the turn of the millennium that Ireland have denied England a Grand Slam at Lansdowne Road.
Excellent news for Irish sports fans is that the two previous years that happened - 2001, as well as the aforementioned 2011, Eire went on to qualify for a major international association football finals.
A 2-2 draw for Eire away to a major group opponent in the first qualifying game, as happened this time, has traditionally also been a harbinger of good tidings in this regard.
I just couldn’t see anything other than an Ireland win going into that game today. That’s 6 of the last 7 championship games in Dublin that Ireland have beaten England in. 7 out of 9 if you go back to 2001.
If you take the cannon fodder Italy out of it, 9 of the 10 games were won by the home side. It should have been 10 out of 10 as Wales were the better side against England in Cardiff and really left that one behind them.
The Championship hasn’t been this tight since the 5 way tie in 1973 when all 10 games were won by the home side.
The anti-rugby brigade have gone to ground in a big way.
Ireland v England rugby matches at Lansdowne Road always illicit sad memories. The day of the 1993 renewal, IRA scum murdered two kids in a bomb in Warrington.
