2022 FIFA World Cup (Part 1)

Imagine the hidings china or india would get?

Clinton and Rosenstock talking up the Germans as being unreal. They were functional by their standards and had lost 5-1 at home to England the previous September😂

Meself and me oul’ fella also drove up to the FAI offfices on Merrion Square about half eight the same evening Keane left the squad to see if there was any commotion from supporters. Off The Ball on Newstalk, which was then in its infancy had announced it was extending its broadcast to 10pm. The nation was transfixed, holding its breath. There would surely be some sort of protest in progress. Alan Hunter of the “Irish Football Supporters Federation” would surely be there at least.

There was no commotion at the FAI offices. It had started to rain lightly and there was nobody there.

I was walking through Roches Stores in the Ilac Centre the next day and there was a t-shirt on sale with a big picture of Keane and the slogan “Keano - World Cup 2002”. It was only about a tenner. I was always sorry I didn’t buy it for the irony value.

Keane is a complete idiot. You can see that by the way he’s defending Ronaldo now

The only thing we can agree on is that Mario Rosenstock is a flute of the highest fuckin order

I know its been done to death but sometimes a fresh set of eyes can alter perspectives. I do think a semi final would have been in the realms of possibility. We would have fancied our chances against Korea who found themselves in Qtr final after Italy and Christian Vieri were rode roughshod. I think we would have found a way to beat them. Anything was possible then against the Germans in a semi final who were very beatable. It is a truly great shame that we will die wondering. There is an argument to be made that Keanes departure illicited a positive response from players but him on the pitch would have been a major upgrade on one of Holland/Kinsella.

I do think Keane has regrets. Especially now sitting where he is today. He has seen the grass isnt always greener and that Ferguson could be ruthless. His reverence at Old Trafford faded and when he needed allies there they were in short supply. His managerial career probably humbled him greatly too. If he had the benefit of a deloreon I think he would have handled it differently and held his fire until it was all over. He really had a chance to cement his legacy as all the greats do going deep into a world cup. Something that even the odd Messi detractors will hold up when analysing Messis greatness. Keane had a chance to put clear water between himself and all midfielders of last 30 years and bookend that debate.

Another thread ruined by something that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

University of Oxford’s model is coming under a bit of pressure early on.

No way was Keane the best midfielder in the world at that time. No chance.

Whoever finishes second in the German Spain group has a handy route to the seni final

Feel sorry for the likes of Armenia, Turkey and Israel. They’d walk qualification if they played in Asia

I have the Germans finishing second and getting Mexico in a semi and beating them on penos to face Argentina in the final.
