Ask the oul wan in Marlfield about the Bishop. That would be a good conversation starter.
Personally I donât care for the place. All of these â5 Starâ country house retreats in Ireland are facsimiles of each other and are generally a rip off. The Heritage is one of the most tasteless places you could imagine and it is in the middle of a giant featureless bog.
The only hotels in Ireland that I would gladly stay are the aforesaid Cliff House, which does offer something different and the Merrion, which is in a league of its own. Pretty well all of the others mentioned here are hotels run by cunts for cunts.
Ballyfin House would be right up your alley fagan.
Afaik thraw seafield is in receivership. Lovely place though and opulent surroundings. None of the snobbery that comes from the bowe family.
Id say herself would like the place thraw
She would. And Iâd love to be beside the sea. Only drawback is that itâs pretty much within walking distance of my oul pair. Theyâd be a bit too close for comfort and it wouldnât be much of a holiday for me seeing as I know the area so well. That said, it is Wexford and thereâs no finer a spot (except for Limerick)

+1
Nail on the head.
A heap of them in the same league. all a waste of hard earned money⌠Knockranny, aghadoe, inchandonnyâŚ
For the 2nd time in a week Iâm going to recommend Kellyâs in Rosslare. Grand and romantic. Fronts onto the beach. Short drive from Wexford town, Kilmore Quay and some of the finest fish restaurants in Ireland. A very impressive place to bring a bird whoâs gonna boss you around for the rest of your life.
Marlfield is a grand spot for a fancy dinner but not to stay. Fagan is on the money. Fooley hasnât a clue.
Seafield is lovely. However, given the owner didnât pay any of his suppliers and builders Iâve a moral issue with staying there. Youâll probably get a midweek break there for tuppence halfpenny.
If money isnât an issue, then go for the Ritz Carlton in Powerscourt. Best Irish hotel Iâve stayed in bar none.
Heading to the Ormonde in Kilkenny City tomorrow for 3 nights. Herself didnât fancy sitting around in the countryside while I plodded along a beach trying to get fit so I picked that place as it has a decent leisure centre and the deal on offer was superb. She gets to go to the Design Centre, whatever the fuck that is, I have a 21m pool at my disposal, so weâre both happy enough.
I am now requesting names of places to eat and drink, if anyone would care to oblige. We both like a good ale, but not Smithwicks; far too weak. Ideally weâd like a Kilkenny pub equivalent of Against the Grain/The Black Sheep. Nice grub, couple of decent pints and then up to the sack to sweat it off.

The Marble City bar on the High St is very good for food. You wonât go far wrong with Matt The Millers, The Hibernian, or Langtons either.

The Roma cafe John Street

Take a spin out to Inistioge Thrawneen, well worth a visit to pass a few hours if the weather is good.

if you like your Indian food, the Royal Spice on Patrick St is about a 3 minute walk from the Ormonde and is excellent. not far from the Left Bank either which is alright for some drinks.

There is a new craft beer only pub opened on Parliament St. (Beside Cleeres). Itâs owned by O Haras and they have 8 or 9 beers on draught and claim to have about 100 altogether. Iâve heard good reports of it already. Cleeres is also a great spot and if you want an old-man-old-world-hurling-talk-only(occasionally interrupted by theatre talk due to proximity to theatre) pub then Reidys is worth a look.
For food you have the fine dining options of Zuni, Patrick St. , Campagne, Johns Green and Rinnucinnis, The Parade, those 3 would be at the upper price range, mid-range there are plenty of options too, The Marble City Bar and the Hibernian are good, Foodworks on Parliament St. has a new premises, good food serving own reared pork and own grown veg, also on Parliament St. is Chez Pierre, simple, tasty French food but it doesnât always open in the evenings. There are two Tapas places- The Grapevine on RosĂŠ Inn St. and Lautrecs on Kieran St and numerous Chinese and Italian places, a decent one of each with good value on Parliament St. too.
John St. (over the bridge from Ormonde) is what youâd call the âlivelyâ end of town. O Gormans at the very top near the station is a drinkers bar, Egans is for the Celtic Brethern, Billy Byrnes is a bit funky and has a double decker bus out the back kitted out as a restaurant serving different street foods and foraged foods all weekend.
Stay away from The Field, it caters to a YOUNG clientele. Thatâs all I can think of so here endeth the public service post.
P.S I love the Roma Cafe
You had me at this. Looking forward to going there now.
Ever had grub in Cafe Sol? Seems to have excellent reviews in the scant bit of googling on Kilkennyâs eateries that Iâve done.
Oh yes, Iâd forgotten about there, used to love it years ago but it changed hands and I havenât been for ages, very popular with the Lunching Ladies brigade (all ages-yummy Mummies, golfing Gorettis, Doctors wives Deirdres, you know the types) I know heaps of people who are regulars there and really rate it
