The places I know for a fact that it happens (I’ve been told by the people themselves and other locals) they’d tend to be one of very few African families. And it tends to lessen as they become better known more integrated through sport. Still exists in what to me was a surprisingly high level.

Ennis has a higher % of blacks I’d say than most Irish towns. My experience with them is they mix freely, partake in GAA, parent teacher groups and politics. I’m sure they’ve been subjected to a few idiots over the years making comments but they are welcome here and have contributed to society. There’s a Nigerian Christian sect whose church I attended one Sunday on the Tulla Road many years ago. The people there were salt of the earth and had nothing but good things to say about their new home.
Travellers don’t do any of the above, well I had one kid in the underage team who was a lovely kid but his auld man ruined it for him. Handing out lollipops in one session we had to cancel he came over and started a row with our secretary to say his kid didn’t get a lolly because he was traveller which wasn’t true. He scared the living hell out of 20 under 6 hurlers with his aggression and language and his poor kid who was part of the group had to watch mortified.

That’s all true but the fact that 90pc of people hate travellers while 10pc hate black people has to have an impact. Its all a vicious circle.

As Spike Lee said last night on BBC News, in order to properly debate these issues, you have to look at the history.
The Declaration of Independence in the US states of course that ‘all men are created equal’. This really meant that ‘all white men are created equal’ of course as the very writers of this landmark document of democracy were themselves slave owners with no intention of wanting to change things. The slaves became vital to the economy, particularly of the Southern States, so changing things would upset the most key elements in the minds of the elite - bucks. This would be a common theme in that country down the years.
So right from the off black people were up against it. This occurring in a capitalist, dog eat dog, country. As slavery ended, black people moved to more deprived areas of the US due to lack of any real human rights. As the years progressed, the areas became more depressed and depressed and crime was inevitable for some. There is of course personal responsibility involved but one thing that is certain is that social areas with no hope of education or progression or money, are many multiple times more likely to commit crime.
What happens then is that black people are seen as criminals and all black people are categorised as that. White people walk almost blindly into it - the US seems to be particularly bad which seems to stem from the hypocritical grounding in which the State was founded.
It is completely wrong of course. All men and women are created equal. I do think though that the world in general has come some way in the last 50 years (not a long time) on racism but it won’t change overnight.
To me the solution has to come from representatives from the parties coming together and talking to each other. Yes - the blacks will have to swallow their pride but there isn’t any other way through this. As a white man the events of the last week show that no form of racism is acceptable, no matter how ‘innocent’.
And yes, the above could be said for travellers in Ireland as well. What has become apparent in the last 30 years in that situation is that a lot of young travellers are no longer content to be oppressed and are happy to get involved in really horrible crime. Again, there is personal responsibility but the discrimination then just grows exponentially.

You’re 80% there — the Dec of Ind was for WASPs and especially those with property … nothing in there about natives, women, blacks or poor whites. Hence the constant shift west and the land grab by poor whites willing to live on the frontier. America was born in greed and it continues to this very day.

It is such a strange country in many ways. Nearly everyone is an immigrant if you go back far enough. That’s because 99.99% of their native people were wiped out.
So you have a real mish mash of different types of people from all over the world, yet no inherent sense of what it means to be actually from the USA.

They’re all about their ethnic ancestry — but get militant with American nationalism when their ‘freedoms’ are supposedly challenged. They’re brain washed by unregulated capitalism — everything is about business — each and every single thing is about competing with your neighbour. You cant have a society when that mentality prevails.
White and black incomes and educational outcomes were equalising until the introduction of crack cocaine into America.
