Irish lad keane showing cajones going back with the flight of the ball to make mark about 2 mins in clip. Ballsy
Hereâs the ladder after Round 9 and weâre starting to get a proper read on the season.
Brisbane to me are in a false position at the top. Theyâve had a relatively easy fixture list up to now but it gets harder from here. Their percentage is that of a team in mid table rather than at the top. They drew with second from bottom North Melbourne yesterday which I think is a canary in the coalmine sort of result and I think youâll see them lose quite a few matches over the coming weeks and I wouldnât even have them nailed on for top 8 yet although they do have the biggest home ground advantage in the league which might get them into the finals.
Last season when they had a very poor start to the season and most people were counting them out of even reaching the top 8 I correctly predicted theyâd finish like a train. This time I think itâs the opposite, that theyâll fade.
Collingwood look very good right now and I think they and Hawthorn will emerge as the top two in the ladder as the season goes on. Jamie Elliott has had a stellar season for the Pies so far. Kicked a bagful against Freo in Perth on Friday night in a very professional win.
My tip for the top of the ladder Freo just arenât doing it and will do well to make the top 8 at all I think. Seems to be a lot of disquiet over Coach Longmuir and his dull style there.
A remarkable statistic is that in 128 years of VFL/AFL seasons Collingwood and Hawthorn have never played each other in the Grand Final. That could change this year.
In terms of POWER RANKINGS, right now, Iâd go:
1 Collingwood
2 Hawthorn
3 GWS
4 Geelong
5 Footscray
6 Brisbane
7 Gold Coast
8 Adelaide
9 Sydney
10 Carlton
Floored by the news that Adam Selwood has committed suicide. Just 3 months after his twin brother did the same. Leaves a wife and 2 kids.
Saw him play in the two International Rules tests in 2006 where he made quite the impression.
Commentary on this clip is by Carlton playing and coaching legend Robert Walls who also died yesterday.
I met him briefly in 2010, i was over in Perth and through some things i was doing at the time i got to go to spend a day with the Eagles at a training at subiaco. Spoke with him and various players over the few hours. Main thing i remember about Adam at the time was he was a pure athletic build, they obviously all are well built men, but he just seemed more imposing than many of them. He was a vocal leader of the group, youâd know how he commanded respect within the group, him Dean Cox, Beau Waters and an injured Shannon Hurn at the time stood out that way amongst the group. Really nice guy for the brief interaction i had with him, albeit they were all decent and happy to chat and were asking me as many questions as i asked them.
Really awful news. He was clearly in bits doing the eulogy at Troyâs funeral and had obviously not recovered. What a terribly sad thing.
8:52 left in Q2:
Footscray 60 Essendon 3.
God Essendon are such a fraud.
Jesus.
Incidentally, the Swans are BACK.
I would caution about thinking ANY victory over Carlton means ANY team is back.
Weâll take what we can get.
Possible West Coast Eagles VICTORY incoming.
In the spirit of unapologetically basking in vindication on the INTERNET, crisis club Melbourne have just walked all over Brisbane in the final quarter at the Gabba, overturning a 24 point deficit to win by 11 and it should have been 30.
Perth Stadium is like Wembley yesterday.
Eagles victory IMMINENT.
Where has this been all year? Hitting 100 points and moving the ball well and defending great. Ryan and Kelly stepping up to close it out. Brilliant win. Just need to keep some momentum and show signs of life
Great match between Geelong and Footscray here. The Doggies have got two goals in the last 30 seconds of the third quarter to reduce the margin to 10 points Geelong 101 Footscray 91. Both of these teams look in good nick for serious September action.
The Cats get it done with a 20 point burst in the last few minutes after the Dogs had got level at 107 each with seven minutes left. 127 to 113 at the siren. Jezza Cameron with six goals for the Cats. Smashing game of footy.
Jamie Elliott and Collingwood are showing Hawthorn whoâs boss tonight with a 39 point lead late in Q3.
Five goals for Elliott tonight, heâs the best player in the league currently, an absolute jack in the box.
This is sublime football, itâs like Mickey Linden or James McCartan in their pomp.
Collingwood are so good to watch with Elliott, Bobby Hill, Nick Daicos and old man Steele Sidebottom who is as good as ever. Theyâre appointment television and the COLL-ING-WOOOOOD chant is one of the best in world sport.
Hawthorn started this season as Premiership favourites on the back of a great second half of last season and a very good trade period and indeed they started this season like a train but their credentials have taken a bit of a battering recently and this looks like three defeats on the bounce, admittedly to the top three on the ladder, but so far this season when theyâve come up against the teams you expect to be there in September theyâve been found wanting.
Absolutely bizarre last ten or twelve minutes there between Adelaide and Brisbane. The Crows went 68-57 up and then the remainder of the game was total Brisbane dominance but the reigning champions had a total nightmare in front of goal and hit 6 behinds without a goal. Talk about throwing a game away. Finishes 68-63 to Adelaide.
Thatâs a good win for Adelaide but in paradoxically unimpressive fashion. They should make the finals but they arenât a Premiership contender. They play Hawthorn in Melbourne next week and whatever odds Hawthorn are for that it will be free money especially after the Hawks got back on the horse yesterday beating Footscray impressively.

No expert but Iâm gonna go out on a limb and say Geelong 151 Essendon 56 (with a minute to go) is quite the tonking
