so using the hurling as a reason to give a walk over /run away was a convenient excuse

Maurice is good too but can be prone to complete hyperbole in relation to Gaelic Football.
He’s very good in this episode by simply letting Shannon talk away and Shannon is well able to talk.

Yeah he does be going on about these Meath and Louth footballers as if they are global superstars when the reality is nobody knows who any of these lads are.
Just on Cork in general, on paper, they’ve done so much right in the last decade in how they’ve built and developed their panel.
I’d consider May 2017 as ground zero day for modern Cork hurling. That was when Coleman, Kingston and Fitzgibbon all started as 20 year olds v Tipp in Thurles and won. Up to that point, post strikes, Cork teams under Denis Walsh/JBM were broadly cobbled together outfits of Hoggy/Harnedy + old lads, lads who switched between Hurling/Football and lads who just weren’t good enough.
Since 2017, they have pretty much year on year added youth and pace to the team/panel and put huge trust in developing players.
Robbie O’Flynn, Jack O’Connor, Niall O’Leary, Tim O’Mahony, Rob Downey and Sean O’Donoghue all came along between 2018-2019 when aged 20-22. Barrett and Connolly were added in 2021 and Joyce in 2022 again as U20’s at the time of their debuts. Eoin Downey was introduced in 2023 as an U20. Brian Hayes came along then too. Diarmuid Healy, Walsh x2 and William Buckley since then.
Nearly all of the above have stayed the course. There has been a clear pattern/pathway/consistency in how they’ve approached things and developed continuity. Its very admiral in so many ways while the likes of Tipp is a much more ruthless environment with fellas asked to sink or swim, and if you dont swim first day out, that can be the end of you.
Yet for whatever reason Cork cant get over the line. 2025 was probably the year it all reached a lovely crescendo with a more or less fully fit squad, a good management, Horgan still there and a more present Harnedy. They’ve now lost Horgan, Harnedy has been phased out and they’ve a management team that are nowhere near the level required.
They’ll be doing well to back from this.
