Albums You've Rediscovered

Used to catch them live whenever I could. One gig when they were supported by the also excellent Harvest Ministers in a venue between D’Olier Street and Hawkins Street stood out. Think that album you posted is a Peel Session. The proper album Speak Slowly is equally brilliant.

Did one of them go on and be involved in The Sewing Room?

Stan Enright or something like that?

Stan Erraught.

A lovely fella. Stars of Heaven before my time but some great tunes. Met him in Leeds a few months ago, where he lives now.

Stars in Heaven featured on the A to Z of Irish Rock compilation which was very influential to my musical tastes at one time

I was a big Dire Straits fan in my youth and still like Knopfler’s solo stuff to this day. Whilst he hasn’t brought out a great solo album, he’s written some tunes that are even better than the Straits back catalogue.

They weren’t really a band though, more musicians backing Knopfler, who was an absolute perfectionist and control freak. Ran his own brother from the original band. When Brothers in Arms was recorded in Montserrat he decided he didn’t like Terry Williams’ drumming and wiped all his parts before re-recording it with Omar Hakim, late of David Bowie at that point in time. The drum crescendo at the start of Money for Nothing was the only snippet of Williams to appear on the final album yet he was brought back in to the band for the subsequent world tour.

The closing track, Brothers in Arms itself, is far and away the best song on it and one of the greatest that Knopfler has ever written.

It was one of the first releases afaik

I never really stopped discovering this album, more so that I have been listening to it more recently.

For me the best album of all time.

You should listen to Willy De Ville’s 1987 album, Miracle. Producer by Knopfler, he plays on most of it, it’s brilliant.

Bought this on cassette when it came out first (1979). The cassette has long since disappeared and I doubt I’ve listened to it in 45 years. I picked up a vinyl copy second hand in Luca Records in Waterford. Brilliant album. 14 tracks. 8-10 of them bangers.

PS. If you’re ever in town Luca is a superb record shop.
