In all fairness that fuck up by Davy would have finished off a lesser team.

Horrible mistake alright. For everything they did after though, holding that Offaly team to one scuttery goal from play for the entire second half was one of their greatest achievements. There were brilliant hurlers on every line of that Offaly team.

They weren’t really. There were some awful duds on that Offaly team.

Hughes and Daithi Regan weren’t very good. Who else though?

Jesus Offaly blew that. Hadn’t realised it was so low scoring.

Agreed. They were a decent team but had some awful passengers too . The reputation as a team of drinkers paradoxically meant that a talent inflator was applied to them.

Rigney and McGuckian weren’t great either imo.

Regan wasn’t the worst by any means. That was a poor era for hurling made interesting by the smaller counties coming to the fore, the big three were at an all time low, somebody had to win them.

The full forward pat Ryan or pat o’connor was like a fella rounded up on the way to a match. Billy dooley was very over rated also.

Hubert Rigney and Martin Hanamy were not inter country standard either

Those lads have 2 All Irelands and a decade of service to Offaly at a time when they were actually competitive. You’re on the mainland too long.

Two decent skins to boot. That Offaly team was a sum of its parts. Almost unquantifiable really.

McGuckan had a decent final I thought in 1995. But he was definitely the weakest back they had. Martin, Rigney and Hanamy were all fine hurlers while Kinehan was an excellent fullback and Whelahan was a Rolls Royce of a hurler.

They definitely carried more lads from 8 to 15 than they did from 2 to 7 and had little depth to their panel. Reagan especially was a complete mullocker but Pilkington, Troy, Duignan and the Dooley’s would have stood out in any era given their skill levels

Wexford perished at the hands of the Whelehan, Rigney, Martin half back line on a number of occasions - I always thought Rigney was very solid. Hanamy usually got the better of Tom Dempsey too. 1996 was the exception to this on every count.

Any decent corner back would get the better of Tom Dempsey in fairness.

Damien Quigley of all people ran riot on McGuckian in the 94 final

Declan Pilikington was average enough as well but on the other hand Clare only had two reasonably consistent forwards, Sparrow and Jamesie. And Jamesie had to double up as a midfielder.

I think Clare could have won that game by 6 or 7 points. But to win it by two with their marquee forward having a bad day was a testament to how good the backs were. Offaly were capable of doing tremendous damage in a short period of time given the forwards they had. They wiped the floor with Kilkenny that year.

Easily their worst player from 95-97 was their goalkeeper Hughes. He gave away a couple of hilarious goals against Wexford in the 97 championship.
