Allianz National Hurling League 2024

Fordes goal was so underrated. He scored with a back swing of about 4 inches. Patrick Horgan probably the only player who could finish it as tidy.

It was a lot easier to get a young lad hit a ball against a wall all day before PlayStations.

Or perhaps they realise sport peaks at U18 and that there’s so much more to life.

That’s correct. It becomes a mini league between the 3 involved

Didn’t he do the same with Iarla Daly against Limerick in 2022? He hurt his ankle and played on.

People treating every Senior Club match as if it’s the best quality going in the country and the standard being accepted that way, whereas it’s been rubbish for years.

They can’t seem to understand that not every match is a ‘titanic, epic battle’. I think the quality should be called out for what it is.

Yep. He doesn’t always come across as the sharpest.

What is the best standard club hurling in the country may I ask

At Senior?

Funnily enough, probably Limerick

Just not the penalty shootouts

There’s a strong chance of another Wexford draw today in Waterford. Although surely on the law of averages that streak of draws has to end. Wexford have some history of draws/moral victories before replay defeats. @Cheasty would probably produce a list of the top 10 iconic Wexford draws. The common denominator being replay defeats (bar Dublin 2008 and Clare 2014) when replays were permitted.

Off the top of my head and in no particular order:
•2003 AI semi-final v Cork: A cracking game where Rory McCarthy produced a moment of magic to rescue a draw.

•2019 v Kilkenny: An incredibly tense stalemate that knocked Galway out of the championship. Drew with Dublin and Galway the same season. Wexford famously drew their way to a Leinster final.

•2001 AI semi-final v Tipp: A second-half comeback to rescue a draw. Larry O’ Gorman to the fore. Martin Storey even made a dramatic return as an impact sub.

•2013 Leinster quarter-final v Dublin: Ger Lough described it as constipated hurling. Andrew Shore almost killed a man/was harshly sent-off in the replay depending on your persuasion.

•2008 Leinster semi-final v Dublin: Possibly the worst game I’ve attended. Wexford registered a mammoth 20ish wides the same night.

2014 Qualifiers v Clare: A belter of a draw in Ennis where Wexford were reeled in from about 10 points up. Followed by a barnstorming win in the replay in Wexford Park against the then reigning champions.

•1993 Leinster Final v Kilkenny: Before my time but would surely register at a very high rank on the list. 4 points up in the dying embers of the game only to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory.

•1993 League final (x2) v Cork. An iconic 3 game league final saga by all accounts.

•2022 v Westmeath: Wexford suffered the ignominy of drawing with Westmeath. Only to go and better it the following year by losing to them having been 17 points in the ascendancy.

•2022 v Galway: A classic of the rousing Wexford comeback genre. An uplifting draw that left Conor Cooney frustrated.

Honourable mentions: 2021 v Kilkenny and 2013 v Clare but the advent of extra-time deprived us a replay defeat.

There is an element of that too.

The top 4 are very strong, after that it falls off a cliff.

Kilkenny is the strongest championship.

Tipp is very even without any outstanding team.
This years champions Kiladangan should have beaten Clonlara handy. They’d be of a similar standard to Doon imo.

A pity Waterford imploded towards the end of Cahill’s reign down there. They should be the challenger to Limericks crown. As it is Limerick don’t a proper rival.

As anside a real pity to see how John McGrath’s career is gone, he’s should have been one of the main forwards in the sport at this stage.

The first half last night was nearly unwatchable. The crowd don’t know what to make of teams trying to hand pass the ball up the field. It’s terrible viewing. WOD turning 180 and striking the ball backwards. Second half was better but not great either.
Lynch is one of the best of all time, imagine how good he would be if he had a better strike.

I left feeling better about Corks chances of coming out of Munster. We have better players than Tipp if the coach can get them in the right positions

Everything is cyclical. This Limerick cycle will end eventually. Cork are next in line to profit. But I’m not as convinced now that those underage prodigies are going to dominate at senior.

Cork have zero prodigies.

These underage All Ireland’s have become a cod. Tipp pissed their way to a few of them, and look where its got us.

In a nutshell, and without generational talent, it’s hard to see the tide turning anytime soon.

I think any two of the other four could come out of Munster. I’m not sure Clare can improve much more from where they were the last two years. Maybe they’ve hit their ceiling. Cork and Waterford surely won’t be as bad.
