I don’t think anyone would have an issue with more games being played but the problem that then poses is that every county has a huge bandwagon following and they won’t really buy into or attend round robin games as the round robin qualifiers from 2005 to 2007 showed us. Only 12k showed up in Thurles for a clash between Tipp and Cork. Hurling has been a game that has thrived on knockout games, this is why the under 21 championship throws up so many great games. The qualifiers have had an adverse effect on provincial attendances as well and a round robin will bring more apathy aside from the hard core supporters
I take your point Puke, but there does seem to be a present malaise within the game and it’s not just the players (who on the evidence I’ve heard are willing for change) but supporters generally who seem to be set for a future change to the championship structure. We have a situation where Munster is obviously competitive, Leinster may throw up the odd competitive match and then we’re into the qualifiers which are a bit meh and nothing really kicks off until August. you’re talking about a round robin series from 7 or 8 years ago, I think (and I accept I’m not exactly on the ground here, these are just impressions from afar) that attitudes are changing and the dominance of two counties, with the odd exception, and they are exceptions, is now having the effect that people are seriously considering the future of the game at inter county level. More games is surely the way forward to levelling out the playing field and breaking the hegemony of Kilkenny’s hold on the championship. When the marquee player in the Kilkenny team is calling for an overhaul of the championship, surely people have to take notice and understand that there are issues with the structure of the game. Jamesie was making the point during the week that even at the height of the 90’'s revival, Clare never played Wexford in league or championship. This is a frankly ridiculous situation. I’ve always advocated scrapping the league and making the championship a divisional league based structure with a finals series. The question of course is what to do with the provincial championships (or rather the Munster final, as I doubt many would care if the Leinster final went the way of the dodo). That’s the sticking point in any of these conversations. I don’t accept that a league based championship would result in falling attendances or interest, quite the opposite.
Bill O’Brien is a throughly alright sort. Despite Brian Cushing, I’m announcing the Houston Texans as my third franchise for this season behind the New York Football Giants and the Denver Broncos.
