American Mass Shootings / Stabbings / Car Crashes/bridge collapses

Because as Whitney said “it’s cheap”

I’d hardly describe it as a “notion.”

The 3 root causes you identified are all by-products or related to poverty anyway.

Add in the notion of the American dream to that. When people are marginalised they find other ways to prosper and gain status. Get rich or die trying ie selling drugs and joining gangs becomes normalised in these communities and an easy way to gain status. They end up destroying themselves from the inside out. The war on drugs, incareceration welfare dependency and on and on and the cycle ends up on auto repeat. Addiction and homelessness become the norm and are multi generational nowadays. It’s the same here in some areas.

It’s odd how reluctant people are to accept this. Slavery was a protracted war perpetrated by the State on the African-American family that went on for well over a century. Do you think that mIght have affected how that community turned out?

I thought Obama’s speech on slavery and the African American family that he gave during his first election campaign was really just basic stuff but it was hailed as brave and one if the greatest speeches on race in American history. I don’t understand why this is controversial. Peeps be cray cray.

There was far greater poverty among the black community in the 1960s than there is now, far greater poverty among all communities actually. Over 20 million American kids are brought up without a father, a staggering 58% of black kids (this number was 20% in the 1960s). 8% of children in the US lived with a mother only in 1960, that number is now 24.4%. The absence of fathers is absolutely devastating black communities and it is not a by product of poverty, as poverty has declined.

That’s a bit disingenuous though. Why are the fathers absent and what can be done to change that fact. There’s a chunk in prison, dead, caught up in addiction and so on… Bernie made a good point on the Joe rogan podcast that there’s lots of people locked up for selling weed but it’s now legal in a lot of places and these people are still locked up.

The notion of being a “great country” is inextricably tied up with the notion of “exceptionalism”.

The Yanks are obsessed with it, so are the Brits. They really do believe that their history is uniquely virtuous. Even liberal media in the US is sort of obsessed with the notion, not to the same toxic extent as right wing media but they constantly offer bland platitudes about America’s virtuousness which can only come from a refusal to fully come to terms with history.

Much of white America has an almost psychopathic aversion to coming to terms with its rotten history, from how it treated the Native Americans to slavery to lynchings to concentration camps to the opposition to the Civil Rights struggle to mass war in the international sphere.

If you refuse to confront and come to terms with your history, you can never escape it.

The British have exactly the same problem and that’s why we have Brexit. The Loyalists have the same problem and that’s why we have what we have in the North.

America saved Europe from the Nazis and later the communists, and saved most of Asia from Imperial Japan. I think that balances things out a bit.

You didn’t respond to my point.

America is the only country to use nuclear weapons, which you supported.

The Russians were the main reason the Nazis lost, don’t try and give the majority of credit to the Yanks.

Weed is still illegal in most states and states that have legalized weed such as CA and CO are also reforming their criminal justice systems. While nobody should be imprisoned for personal use or selling small quantities, selling drugs to a child should be a felony, just as selling alcohol to a child is.

So defensive. You’ve basically just proved Sid’s point there, which is unforgiveable.

Yes, life in the UK and Ireland would have been much better under the communists.

So you don’t think defeating the Nazis and communism was a good thing?
Interesting. Are you still high from the weekend?

Don’t fucking move the goalposts, the United states did not “save” Europe from the Nazis. Keep that Yankee propaganda away from me.

America stayed out of the war until late 1941 and appeased the Nazis.

The Russians did most of the real fighting but came to a pact with the Nazis.

The Brits appeased the Nazis and stood idly by while Czechoslovakia was invaded, in fact they actively colluded with the initial carving up of Czechoslovakia.

None of the three main allies has clean hands.

Why should the USA have to face up to its history of slavery when it’s the country that defeated Communism?

Why should the Brits have to face up to their rotten history of colonialism when they defeated the Nazis?

We were great innit
