[br][br]Rarely can an Ireland team have held out so little hope in advance of a home international. Against France in the last campaign there was an effort to portray the opposition as superstars in advance, possibly to avoid a public backlash in the event of a humiliation. That was gamesmanship though and Ireland at home should be a match for anyone. Throughout the Charlton, McCarthy and Kerr eras the likes of Spain, England, the Netherlands, Portugal came to Dublin and expected (and generally got) a tough game. Now we stand in fear of our opponents… . .

Discussion thread for the new article on the site - preview of Ireland V Czech Republic. Hard to come up with any sort of decent starting eleven for the match. Can’t pick any decent central partnerships at all.

Rumours this morning of Lee Carsley coming back as a late call-up. As welcome as that might be at another stage I think that would just show Staunton up for the fraud that he is. Is he suggesting that Tabb, Quinn, Ireland, Kilbane, Douglas and Miller are all better than Carsley but when a couple of them are struggling with knocks then maybe Lee could provide some cover?

Now Carlsey has been called up. Make up your mind Stan. Pathetic timing the day before the game - having already decided Quinn, Tabb, Kelly, Foley etc. were more important.

Carsely called up to squad
10/10/2006 - 10:38:37

Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton has performed a major u-turn and called Lee Carsley into the squad for tomorrows Euro 2008 qualifier with the Czech Republic.

The Everton midfielder has spent the last two and a half years in retirement after deciding to focus on club football and family at the time.

Recently, however, Carsley contacted Staunton, stating he wished to be considered for future international fixtures.

The 32-year-old was then initially overlooked when the squad was announced for the Euro 2008 qualifying double-header with Cyprus and the Czechs.

When fellow central midfielders Steven Reid and Graham Kavanagh then withdrew through injury prior to Saturdays 5-2 humiliation by the Cypriots, Carsleys return appeared a formality.

However, Staunton maintained a defiant stance, explaining if he were to select Carsley it would be a kick in the teeth for the other members of the squad.

Even in the wake of the nightmare in Nicosia, Staunton defended his decision not to select the 29-times capped Carsley.

When asked whether not recalling the combative player was a mistake, Staunton replied: No, because we are looking forward.

If you remember, a lot of you (the media) didnt have a lot of nice things to say about Lee when he last played for Ireland.

When informed these were now different circumstances, a defiant Staunton added: Well, yeah, but I decided to go with (Stephen) Ireland and he didnt let me down.

Staunton has clearly wrestled with his conscience over the last 48 hours, with Carsley now set to step in after being given the cold shoulder by the Irish boss.

The Republic are in desperate need of a result against the Czechs at Lansdowne Road tomorrow after starting the current qualifying campaign with defeats to Germany and the Cypriots.

Former Everton team-mate Kevin Kilbane, now with Wigan, last week explained just what Carsley would bring to the squad.

Speaking to PA Sport, Kilbane said: He is very professional on the pitch, someone who is not afraid to stamp his authority on games.

He knows his job, sitting in like Claude Makelele at Chelsea in that he gets the ball and gives it to people he feels can do a better job going forward than him.

He wants to do the best for the team. I would say he sacrifices himself for the team, while he also has a fear factor about him.

I think he is the real reason why, while I was at Everton, they qualified for the Champions League two years ago.

Last season he was out injured and we struggled throughout, but now he is back in and Everton seem to be going well again. I dont think that is a coincidence.

Calling up Carsley at this late stage is indeed a joke. This guy is making things up as he goes along. He blatantly doesn’t have a clue.

SHIT. McGeady has gone to hospital for an x-ray on his ankle.

Out of tomorrow’s game it seems - hope it doesn’t affect Champions League.

The RTE panel should be great tomorrow night. That is a truly pathetic back 4 and with Henderson in goals behind it’s even worse - he’s a shite keeper by the way for those who haven’t seen him.

The wings with Duff and now Reid presumably will still be ok and Carsley, if selected, will bulk up midfield. It’s still a really brutal team though.

Thank fook, from Celtic site:

McGeady scan results
Newsroom Staff

AIDEN McGEADY today had an MRI scan and x-ray on his ankle which he injured while training with the Republic of Ireland squad ahead of their game in Dublin tomorrow night against the Czech Republic.

Celtic can confirm the scan and x-ray revealed that the player has strained his ankle and there are no broken bones.

Just had a discussion with a mate here as to whether all these injuries may have something to do with Staunton’s training methods. It wouldn’t surprise me if he was overdoing them.

I am actually heading to Lansdowne tomorrow night. These are the times when true fans are called for and when my country needs me I’ll not be found wanting…

Apparently he cancelled the warm down after the game on Saturday in order to have a crisis meeting/almighty row. There followed a 5 hour plane journey home and quelle surprise half of the ‘elite athletes’ in the squad wake up on Sunday with tight hamstrings etc.

He’s probably running the fook out of them too. Lucky for Stan that McGeady went over innocuously or I would have hunted him down, the prick.

Anyone have any spare tickets for tomorrow!!! Please!!!

No spare tickets I’m afraid but myself, farmer, tinnion and a couple of others are heading if you fancy a few pints before/after? 51 maybe? Shouldn’t imagine it’s too difficult to get tickets though.

So, predictions for tomorrow?

I’ll go for Ireland 1-4 Czech Republic.

Them to be 3-0 up after an hour. Us to score amidst those really pathetic cheers a team gets when everyone knows they’re shit but they grab a consolation their efforts deserved. Then they’ll get another just to prove they could have stepped up another gear had they wanted.

Man with gun to try kill Stan like the last time.

Thursday Headlines:

Delaney to Stan by his Man.

Have to say I thought there’d be bucket(s) of tickets availble. Particularly on the terraces.
