That famous institution with the Theatre of Dreams, Matt Busby Way, the largest fanbase in the world, the mantle of the biggest club in the world, unparalleled success at home and in Europe the list goes on and on. Manchester United truly are the greatest impostors in European football. As a commercial organisation they have been fantastic, trading on the myth that no other club can match them on or off the park. That’s a smashing article. Totally agree with all its sentiments but his reputation is so great because the English as a nation believe their league to be more important and prestigious than European achievement. In a way I can understand part of the fawning over him by Manchester United supporters - they hadn’t won a league in nearly 30 years until his side did it in 1993 - but his lack of achievement in Europe with the oceans of money they’ve had in the new Premier League era is pretty damning.
