Broad picks up the wicket of Smith, 7th ball after lunch. 101/3.
Broad gets Clarke now, heâs bowled really well today. Big victory on the cards for England now.
Three wickets lost in six overs with just nine runs on the board. The all too familiar Australian batting collapse. And as I type the fifth wicket falls. This is carnage.
What a catch by Cook to remove Haddin off the bowling of Moeen.
97/1 to 122/6. This is some batting collapse.
Fitzy, Special Olympiakos havenât been seen around here either since the start of the Ashes.
Ah lovely, the Poms will be getting their hopes up now.
The Aussies will mug em off good n proper
Donât think so. The Aussies are creaking already
In the 35 Ashes series since the War, only on four occasions has a side lost the first test and went onto win the Series.
Be interesting to see how Dadâs Army handle the short turnaround to Lordâs. They had the 6 oldest players on the pitch in Cardiff. Rogers & Haddin 37, Voges 35, Clarke & Watson 34, Johnson 33. It was the loss of another 35 year Ryan Harris just before the off that through their plans into a complete tailspin.
Iâd imagine Watson and Haddin will be dropped for Lordâs.
They wonât drop both. Watson Iâd say.
Yeah, Mitch Marsh for Watson. Iâm guessing Starc wonât be ready /risked with the short turnaround, so Siddle will probably play.
Haddin had a very poor game with the gloves. Dropping Root on 0 could well be the pivotal moment of the entire series. 43/4 and they could have skittled England out cheaply.
His batting has been awful for 18 months, but the line was his skills with the gloves alone justified selection. A few months shy of turning 38, surely its time for a younger man to have a go. Mind you, I havenât the first idea what his understudy Peter Nevill is like. I see heâs 30 in October and has a first class batting average of 37.62.
Test Match Special can be listened to outside the UK. There is a you tube channel. Saw a link to it today from the BBC ball by ball text.
Think theyâll be making two other changes as listed above, so think theyâll want to avoid at least the appearance of outright panic after one loss by making any more. If Haddin has another poor game, he could very well be chopped then alright. Also, Lordâs is notoriously tough to keep on because of the slope so they may not want to throw a debutant in there.
Its worth remembering that in their last two series England went one up in both Grenada and at Lordâs (against New Zealand) and lost abjectly in Barbados and Headingley in both series in the 2nd test. Unlike either of those first test wins, this was a complete performance from start to finish in all three disciplines. Winning the toss and batting first at Lordâs will be crucial for both sides.
Listened to it on the opening day, great to have given that the BBC commentary on digital radio/online is always blocked with that ârights restrictionsâ nonsense.
Will England make any changes for the second test, lads?
No. Theyâve already named the same 13 man squad and will name an unchanged team barring any late injuries.
Course they have mate. They think itâs job done.
Itâs going to be hilarious watching the next 4 Tests and seeing the Aussies mug the Poms off
