Aston Villa - in the dropzone

Still holding O’Neill responsible for the size of the wage budget in proportion to revenue. That’s laughable. I’m guessing you have no idea how stupid that makes you look.

O’Neill didn’t have any influence over the revenue.

He would have had some, but not all, influence over how the money he was given to spend on wages was distributed among players.

How foolish do you have to be to suggest that O’Neill could possibly be responsible for wages as a percentage of turnover? Christ almighty.

And the selective facts are just that, selective. Take some time out to do a little graph over league finishes for Villa in the last 10 years or so. Then highlight the ones where O’Neill was in charge. Either every manager is shite or Villa just aren’t that good. Constant comparisons with Manchester United, Arsenal etc don’t mask the fact they’re a smaller club. At some point you have to realise you have deluded expectations if they’re let down by every manager.

O’Neill is an average manager at best and an oddball to boot, the majority of his signing he paid over the odds for and has left villa in the mire, whether you think he did a decent job there or not the fact of the matter is that he has left the club in a shoddy state of affairs and has to take most of the blame for that…

Houllier wants to sign Bridge

KIB why do you consider Aston Villa one of the big clubs of English football?

this really is the 85% thread!

where are you getting that figure, which you mention the whole time KIB?

I could only find 76%.

here and

Aston Villa’s financial statistics do not look good. Their wage to turnover ratio is 76.8% and their debt is Ā£71.9 million which explains why they are willing to part with some of their best players to decrease their wages and increase their turnover

here

In any case, I dont see what O Neill has to do with revenue, which is the point rocko was making. it should be up to the board to generate revenue, and it should be up to the board to sort out wages. most of those wage increase came with Lerner too. there wage bill to revenue was lower the previous year, and before that again. wasnt there something about him shipping off 7m or more to a buddy overseas as part of wages. would this figure be in that wage calculation, or staff wages for that matter?

to be honest, I had thought O neill took them as far as he could go. he didnt have enough faith in his sqaud to push on the next level. but to blame him for the clubs level now? no way. same with Hodgson and Benitez. yeah, Benitez may have fooked around and spent too much etc, but he didnt leave a club that is dwindling above relegation. both clubs have squads that are playing way way below par and should not be where they are.

Rintintin keeping very quiet in relation to his role in hounding O’Neill out of the club.

There is no point discussing anything to do with Aston Villa on this site, that is my reason for being tight lipped on it.

I presume the European Cup win would have something to do with it, and consistently being in the top half. They have a decent stadium and get big crowds most of the time.

They are a very boring club though. I think they need a murder, or a real enforcer Firm or a massive tragedy to really get them going, thats what all the big clubs seem to have.

Interesting theory but how do Arsenal fit in?

Few posts above say it all about villa. They achieved consistent good results under O’Neill but not groundbreaking. He was better than most of his predecessors but left in a hurry. Judge him on that though. Not on Spurs or revenue or perceived ageing.

True, maybe its 'cos they have nice kits? And they did have the coolest stadium going. Would i be right in saying their popularity in Ireland started much later than the rest when Brady came along?

There is no point in discussing Aston Villa if you ask me…

I didn’t.

I’m telling you

Does the purchase of bent make a mockery of the logic in sacking o neill because of debt?
