Below in kilkee we’ve a little dog house outside. If it works for you to have the dog inside then that’s absolutely grand, but there’s nothing cruel about keeping the dog outside at night either, they’re absolutely grand there too.

When Brady came on the scene i slept next to him for the first couple of nights and he was grand after. We did shifts to bring him outside every two hours and he grasped it after a few days, no toilet in the house… But they mainly whine for this purpose. We crate trained from the off so he knew that was his space and to this day you just have to open it at night and he goes in. But they don’t like to shit/piss where they sleep so hence the whining.

The kind of behaviour that seems normal until you have kids 
Cats are brilliant. Once you accept that they’re not a dog, something lot’s of people struggle with, you’ll be fine. They’d bite you as soon as rub off you but that’s half the fun. I love the wildness in cats. I’ve been scrapped and bitten a hundred times and would take another hundred.

I know… But if you can muster the energy to get up and do it you get rewarded for it. You’d want your kids to be about 10 years out of nappies to attempt it post kids tho
When I had the Labrador he slept outside in a bed in the shed. Then one year when he was nine or so, there was a bad snow and I brought him in to sleep and I hadn’t the heart to chuck him out again as he was getting old. The two little terriers I have now sleep inside in a cage. The pup took a bit of training to get the night time right but he is grand now. Bobby was house trained when I got him.
I’m a light sleeper and never need much to function so I’ve no problem letting him up to shit. It’s the whining after i’ve left him out and he’s done the business that I’m unsure of. He isn’t hungry, attention seeking ? I don’t want him to be distressed
Id be a great fan of both animals, as you say cats take no shit, purring for a head scratch one second then bam your clawed! Similar to dogs but sometimes forgotten with cats is the type of breed makes a big difference. Ive a lovely tiger type equally happy to play or sleep, got her neutered few weeks ago so she is back outside now.
