BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012

Jess was looking great tonight. She dresses up well.

Lance Armstrong has been stripped of the BBC overseas sports personality award that the American cyclist won in 2003, it emerged on Sunday.

Armstrong won the award nine years ago following his seventh Tour de France victory, but after his triumphs were wiped from the record books following an investigation into doping allegations the BBC dropped his name from the list of previous winners published in the programme for Sunday’s event.

The space next to 2003 was left blank. No explanation was offered in the programme as to why no name was listed but the BBC confirmed Armstrong’s award had been rescinded.

A BBC statement said: “Following the UCI’s decision to strip Lance Armstrong of his Tour de France titles, it has been decided by the BBC to withdraw his Overseas Sport Personality of the Year award - Armstrong was voted the winner of this award in 2003 based on his sporting achievements at that time.”

It is not clear whether Armstrong has been asked to return the trophy, which as with the overseas award every year was decided by a panel of judges than by public vote.

Armstrong was stripped of all seven Tour wins after the US Anti-Doping Agency revealed systematic doping by the American and his US Postal team, with the International Cycling Union supporting that action.

The unkindest cut of all no doubt.

After losing all his sponsorship deals, millions of dollars, his 7 tour titles and the respect of everyone on the planet, this final cruel blow may just push him over the edge.

Are we taking bets on what year Wiggins gets stripped of his award?

Sir Bradley Wiggins now

If he was getting the knighthood then so should Andy Murray probably.

Andy has to settle for the OBE

Probably would have got the Knighthood if he won Wimbledon. His best mate Fergie will be fuming over this.

Sir Ben Ainslie.

Although I’ve been using that term for quite a few months now when referring to the legendary sailor.

England’s finest saiłor since Sir Francis Drake.

My word, nobody thought it was possible, but it’s only July 15th and already, this year’s version looks like it could, if anything, eclipse the magnificence of 2012.

The competition has come a long way from the days of Damon Hill winning for coming second in the Formula 1 World Championship and Greg Rusedski winning for reaching the final of the US Open tennis.

Britain is great again.

My early tips:
BBC Sports Personality of the Year: Andrew Murray (beating off strong competition from Christopher Froome)
BBC Overseas Personality: Luis Suarez
BBC Team Of The Year: The British Loins (closely challenged by England and Wales cricket)
BBC Lifetime Achievement award: Sir Ian McGeechan
