@peddlerscross This was the Sunday Game yearâs end montage for the 2008 All-Ireland football championship so I associate this one with the 2008 Tyrone v Kerry final.
Itâs a great, great song. A song about death which somehow manages to feel like a celebratory anthem.

In the pantheon of British music, a special place is reserved, in a mildly racist way, for the âclassic British singleâ. Which means a song by a BAND or a guitar based artist which passes into the DNA of the nation. The âclassic British singleâ means Hey Jude, Satisfaction, My Generation, Waterloo Sunset, Heroes, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Going Underground, London Calling, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, Donât Look Back In Anger, Bittersweet Symphony. It means the sort of songs that MTV UK would have played for an hour in 1998 with the words âNational Anthemsâ written in the top right hand corner of the screen. It means the sort of music that white van man would not feel embarrassed listening to. It means the sort of music that Stuart Pearce would like. It means the sort of music that will be a shoo-in to be included in, say, an opening or closing cermeony for an Olympic Games in London, cos itâs, loike, British innit.
This song is probably the closest thing to that the 21st century has produced. It is on many peopleâs bucket lists to see Elbow play live at least once in their life because they want to be present at at least one live performance of this.
I associate this song with Celticâs epic chase and overtaking of their Glasgow rivals Rangers FC in the final weeks of the 2007/08 Fine Fare Scottish Premier Division season. The song had not yet been released as a single but the album had been released on St. Patrickâs Day and the buzz was steadily building up about this song.

One Day Like This was played on Reeling in the Years over the Obama election victory in 2008.
I wouldnât be overly gone on it I must say.
For a few weeks I was sort of of the same view because it was so consciously an effort to create another Hey Jude.
Then I decided to surrender because it started to give me chills.
These are really the same track and have to be listened to together.
One of the best intros to an album I can recall.
Words was heavily featured in Sky Sportsâ Premier League coverage in 2002/03. I recall Diego Forlan getting a BIG late, late winner for Manchester United against Chelsea at Old Trafford in a Saturday lunchtime game around January or February 2003 and this blaring as the league table was shown immediately afterwards so I sort of associate it with that goal.

True story: After U2 played at Slane on September 1st, 2001, which I had arrived at on my own at about 8:30pm having been at something else earlier, I went to a pub in the village. While looking at the telly in the corner showing Sky Sports News confirming the shocking scoreline of Germany 1 England 5, which was by far the most shocking thing that would happen that entire month, a lad I used to work with in a warehouse in Ballyer tapped me on the shoulder. Ah, howya. He and his GANG were staying in a house two miles down the road towards Drogheda. Do you want to come back, we have drink. I agreed to go back to this house instead of making for a bus back to Dublin. I slept in a car and donât have much recollection apart from talking to some stoner from Wolverhampton the next morning and talking for half an hour about Steve Bull and Andy Mutch. I got a lift back to Dublin with some people I didnât know. Some of them were very hungover. Two of them were going to the Meath v Kerry game at Croke Park. But at 3:15pm, this car was stuck solid in a traffic jam on the old road between Dublin and Dunshughlin, very near to where the M3 toll plaza now is. I donât know why they went this route, but anyway. At this precise moment as the car was stopped in this traffic jam, the car radio had Today FM on and this song was playing. And half way through it, the lad in the front passenger seat opens the door of stationary car, runs to a ditch and vomits his stomach up.
So, I will always associate this song with a fella I didnât know getting out of a car to vomit in a ditch at this precise location.

This is so good. It was doing the heavy rotation rounds on the music channels on number 500-520ish that everybody used to waste their time watching before the INTERNET hit critical mass, around about the time Munster played Wasps in THAT Heino semi-final.
