SS Ernie O’Malley’s notebook only contained the names of the Volunteers of the West Kilkenny Brigade. Given their less than stellar performance in the Tan War I’ve always wondered whether it was really an accident that he didn’t destroy the notebook. Despite all that he had written about himself O’Malley remains one of the most shadowy figures of the era.
