Terrific post and a long overdue question. I’ll go with the following:
15. J.P.R. Williams (London Welsh, Bridgend & Wales)
14. T.G.R Davies (London Welsh, Cardiff & Wales)
13. J.C. Guscott (Bath & England)
12. C.M.H. Gibson (N.IF.C. & Ireland)
11. J.J. Williams (Llanelli & Wales)
10. B. John (Cardiff & Wales)
9. G.O. Edwards (London Welsh, Cardiff & Wales)
1. J.I. McLauchlan (Jordanhill College, West of Scotland & Scotland)
2. B.C. Moore (Nottingham, Harlequins & England)
3. F.E. Cotton (Sale & England)
4. M.O. Johnson (Leicester & England)
5. W.J. McBride (Ballymena & Ireland)
6. L.B.N. Dallaglio (Northampton & England)
7. J.F. Slattery (Blackrock College & Ireland)
8. T.M. Davies (Swansea & Wales)
Few criteria. I’ve only selected players based on what I’ve seen with my own eyes. My earliest recollection of the British Lions is the 1983 tour to New Zealand but I have seen all the games from the 1971, 74, 77 & 80 tours on video and DVD. I’ve placed considerable emphasis on the pinnacle of the sport winning a test series with the Lions in the Antipodes. The likes of Graham Price who locked the scrum in all twelve tests on the 1977, 80 & 83 and Brian O’Driscoll who is currently on his fourth tour lost out in that regard as they have never played on a winning test series team.
Sidney has selected his XV already and I think we have nine of the same team. The prop forwards pick themselves, the Mighty Mouse on the loose head, who played in all eight tests on the victorious 1971 & 74 tours and the 1997 tour manager on the tight head. What a selfless act it was on the 1974 tour to switch from his natural home on the tight head to lock the scrum.
I’ve gone with one of my all time favourite players at hooker, Brian Moore. Keith Wood with his dynamic game in the loose came into the reckoning but Brian Moore edge’s him out in the scrummaging and throwing departments not to mention his leadership quality. Brian also distinguished himself against tougher adversaries in Tom Lawton in 1989 and Sean Fitzpatrick in 1993 than what Fester faced in Naka Drotske in 1997 and Brendan Cannon in 2001. How Sir Ian must still regret leaving him out of that first test in Christchurch in 1993, a test which was only lost in the last minute for Kenny Milne.
Willie John and Johnno in the engine room. Nothing further to be said really.
I have to go with Mervyn Davies at Number 8. Again like Mighty Mouse played in all 8 tests on the 1971 & 74 tours and that career ending brain tumor in 1976 robbed him of the captaincy in 1977. Phil Bennett even by his own admission was not officer class and if Merv had been able to lead Britain’s finest, you just feel it would have been the difference to tip a narrow series loss into the win bracket.
I’ve gone with Lawrence Bruno Nero for the blind side slot. That’s where he operated from in 1997. Mike Teague, the player of the series in 1989 narrowly loses out.
Slats is an automatic team at openside. Nobody else comes into the reckoning.
The same really with Gareth Edwards at scrum half and the King, Barry John at out half.
Mike Gibson gets the 12 jersey and I’ve cheated maybe a little bit in putting the Prince of Centres, Jeremy Guscott at Number 13.
JJ Williams has to be on the left wing for his record equalling haul of 4 test tries on the 1974 tour and Gerald Davies gets a tight call over Ieuan Evan on the right,
Gavin Hastings very unlucky to miss out. An inspirational leader on the troubled tour of 1993 and sensational in Australia in 1989 but ultimately the man who revolutionised full back play, J.P.R gets the nod.
