British Loins Tour to Australia 2013 - Official Thread

There has been a replacement called up. But it’s not what we expected.

Ireland’S TOM COURT is a British Loin and goes straight into the replacements for Tuesday’s match!:clap:

Corbs’ calf is the mystery injury that has been the subject of so much speculation.

Paul O’Connell is still officially “being assessed”.

Great to see Courty’s proven scrummaging ability recognised.

Tom Court ffs.

The reason he was selected is that he’s out in Australia. This has happened before on Lions Tours. It would seem the obvious thing to do if you missed the original touring party is just “happen” to be be holiday in the country of the tour along with your boots.

Hahaha…
James Horwill been cited. But it’s a fucking disgraceful and dangerous tackle. When you see it he is clearly now making a natural movement backwards.

There is no doubt he is raking a guys face, a fucking disgrace and he shoul get 12 months.

Amazingly the Aussie media are trooping the out the old players to say he did nothing wrong. It’s fucking unbelievable. He is a scumbag and should be treated accordingly.
A Kangaroo court has cleared Horwill.

New Zealand QC Nigel Hampton’s verdict:

"I found that I could not reject as being implausible or improbable Horwill’s explanation that, as he was driving forward with his right leg raised, he was spun off balance through the impact of Lions players entering the ruck from the opposite side.
"In an endeavour to regain his balance, Horwill brought his right leg to the ground, unknowing that Alun-Wyn Jones’ head was in that area, due to having his sight impeded by the presence of Michael Hooper and Tom Croft, who were beneath him and over the top of Alun-Wyn Jones.

Terrific post and a long overdue question. I’ll go with the following:

15. J.P.R. Williams (London Welsh, Bridgend & Wales)
14. T.G.R Davies (London Welsh, Cardiff & Wales)
13. J.C. Guscott (Bath & England)
12. C.M.H. Gibson (N.IF.C. & Ireland)
11. J.J. Williams (Llanelli & Wales)
10. B. John (Cardiff & Wales)
9. G.O. Edwards (London Welsh, Cardiff & Wales)
1. J.I. McLauchlan (Jordanhill College, West of Scotland & Scotland)
2. B.C. Moore (Nottingham, Harlequins & England)
3. F.E. Cotton (Sale & England)
4. M.O. Johnson (Leicester & England)
5. W.J. McBride (Ballymena & Ireland)
6. L.B.N. Dallaglio (Northampton & England)
7. J.F. Slattery (Blackrock College & Ireland)
8. T.M. Davies (Swansea & Wales)

Few criteria. I’ve only selected players based on what I’ve seen with my own eyes. My earliest recollection of the British Lions is the 1983 tour to New Zealand but I have seen all the games from the 1971, 74, 77 & 80 tours on video and DVD. I’ve placed considerable emphasis on the pinnacle of the sport winning a test series with the Lions in the Antipodes. The likes of Graham Price who locked the scrum in all twelve tests on the 1977, 80 & 83 and Brian O’Driscoll who is currently on his fourth tour lost out in that regard as they have never played on a winning test series team.

Sidney has selected his XV already and I think we have nine of the same team. The prop forwards pick themselves, the Mighty Mouse on the loose head, who played in all eight tests on the victorious 1971 & 74 tours and the 1997 tour manager on the tight head. What a selfless act it was on the 1974 tour to switch from his natural home on the tight head to lock the scrum.

I’ve gone with one of my all time favourite players at hooker, Brian Moore. Keith Wood with his dynamic game in the loose came into the reckoning but Brian Moore edge’s him out in the scrummaging and throwing departments not to mention his leadership quality. Brian also distinguished himself against tougher adversaries in Tom Lawton in 1989 and Sean Fitzpatrick in 1993 than what Fester faced in Naka Drotske in 1997 and Brendan Cannon in 2001. How Sir Ian must still regret leaving him out of that first test in Christchurch in 1993, a test which was only lost in the last minute for Kenny Milne.

Willie John and Johnno in the engine room. Nothing further to be said really.

I have to go with Mervyn Davies at Number 8. Again like Mighty Mouse played in all 8 tests on the 1971 & 74 tours and that career ending brain tumor in 1976 robbed him of the captaincy in 1977. Phil Bennett even by his own admission was not officer class and if Merv had been able to lead Britain’s finest, you just feel it would have been the difference to tip a narrow series loss into the win bracket.

I’ve gone with Lawrence Bruno Nero for the blind side slot. That’s where he operated from in 1997. Mike Teague, the player of the series in 1989 narrowly loses out.

Slats is an automatic team at openside. Nobody else comes into the reckoning.

The same really with Gareth Edwards at scrum half and the King, Barry John at out half.

Mike Gibson gets the 12 jersey and I’ve cheated maybe a little bit in putting the Prince of Centres, Jeremy Guscott at Number 13.

JJ Williams has to be on the left wing for his record equalling haul of 4 test tries on the 1974 tour and Gerald Davies gets a tight call over Ieuan Evan on the right,

Gavin Hastings very unlucky to miss out. An inspirational leader on the troubled tour of 1993 and sensational in Australia in 1989 but ultimately the man who revolutionised full back play, J.P.R gets the nod.

Fuck off I’m not reading all that.

POC confirmed out with a fractured arm. Tragic news.

Meanwhile Gatty has turned up the heat on Robbie Deans by claiming it’s Deans’ fault that Kurtley Beale slipped while taking that final kick on Saturday, because the coach didn’t check that Beale was wearing the correct studs.

Very clever mind games from Gatty.

More shameful behaviour from the Australians - they really are horribly uncouth.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of the Wallabies winger Digby Ioane after he failed to appear in a Melbourne court on an assault charge.
Ioane, 27, is facing a charge of unlawful assault after he allegedly attacked a man in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran on 9 March.
A warrant was issued when Ioane did not appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.
Ioane plays for the Queensland Reds in the Super Rugby competition and was part of the Australia team that narrowly lost the first Test to the British Loins on Saturday night.

The GAA would have had him off on that in an instant.

Wounded Lion O’Connell concealed broken arm - Alexander
AUSTRALIA’S forwards could not believe British & Irish Lions lock Paul O’Connell had broken his arm in the first test in Brisbane, given the Irishman packed down for the final scrum as if nothing had happened, Wallabies prop Ben Alexander said.
O’Connell was ruled out of the series on Monday with a fracture in his right forearm, but his bravery in the final minutes of the Lions’ thrilling 23-21 victory last Saturday had left the Wallabies pack with a deep impression.
Injured in the closing minutes, O’Connell was assessed on field by medical staff but waved them away after a few moments to rejoin his team mates.
“Losing O’Connell is a massive blow. In this country he’s got humongous respect,” the 28-year-old Alexander told reporters in Melbourne on Tuesday, having watched the Irishman from the touchline in Brisbane after being subbed off.
"Our physio said ‘oh, he’s just broke his arm there’ before the last few scrums. But he got up and we thought ‘oh maybe not’ and he packed those last few scrums with a busted arm.
"(We) didn’t win, so (we) shook hands after the game and you thought ‘ok, maybe he doesn’t have a busted arm.’
"So they’re going to miss that, they’re going to miss that hardness that the Europeans see week in, week out when he plays for Munster and Ireland.
“He’s one of the greatest players I’ve ever played against and he’s a big loss for the Lions.”

We’ll just ignore the last line of the piece perhaps, smashing name the journo has btw.

As it happened, the Wallaby forwards dominated the final scrum to earn a penalty that Kurtley Beale was unable to convert to win the game.
JONES PRAISE

I noticed Austin Healy had a lash at the Aussies today about their treatment of the British Loins, well done Austie boy, lay into the planks.
