You’re the one that needs to do the admitting here. Admit you were wrong now in your incorrect assertion that Michael Jones never played at 6 for New Zealand and i’ll accept it.
Michael Jones is no filler. I’m struggling to recall many finer performances at Number 6 from a New Zealand blindside than that served up by Michael Jones when New Zealand won in Durban and at Loftus Versfeld in 1996 to record that historic first ever series win in South Africa.
There are slim enough pickings on the home front in terms of prospective Loins head coaches.
The four home nations are or up until very recently were all coached by southern hemispherers (Gregor Townsend is obviously just taking up his role as Scotland coach).
Sir Ian and Jim Telfer are all-time legends but both are probably too old now (certainly Telfs is) and have given all the service they can give.
That leaves former international coaches or current or former club coaches to pick from.
Which means you’d be looking at the likes of Eddie O’Sullivan, Declan Kidney, Sir Clive, Mike Ruddock, Stuart Lancaster, Brian Ashton etc in the first group, and maybe Mark McCall, Rob Baxter, Dean Richards or Brian McLaughlin in the second group. Most of those aren’t realistic options for one reason or another.
And I doubt a Premiership club would allow a head coach to take a year out.
Conor O’Shea might have been a wild card had he not taken the Italy job.
I actually wouldn’t have minded Fast Eddie getting a shot at it.
I think Ruddock would have been a good shout - he had immediate success with Wales, understands the Irish mentality through his time here, and seems the type that would create a good spirit in a camp.
Dean Richards to me also ticks all the boxes - a heroic player and an excellent coach, but he’s unlikely to ever get a shot at a major coaching job now due to the way he threw the noble etiquette of the game under the bus in 2009.
Spoofing now as usual. He wasn’t even good enough for the 95 squad as Kronfeld had cemented his place at seven Greg Brewer was considered better ffs. Michael Jones is not a number six no matter what you say or how you present it. I’m not even convinced he was that important in the matches you reference another attempt to blatantly cover your convenient selection. Zinzan and Christian Cullen and Wilson were the stars from my recollection.
You’re making a holy show of yourself now. There was no Greg Brewer. Its Mike Brewer.
Michael Jones was left out of the 1995 World Cup squad because New Zealand’s quarter final and semi final were both going to fall on a Sunday when he wouldn’t play. Management didn’t want a repeat of the disruption of 1991.
The same issue arose in 1991 when the quarter final against Canada and semi final against Australia also fell on Sunday. His absence in the semi final against Australia in 1991 was fatal to New Zealand prospects of winning.
Good man a grammatical error. Greg Blewett a fantastically underrated cricketer was who I mixed him up with it. I’ll admit my shortcomings but I doubt you will. Spoofer
I don’t think you can just shoehorn in a player but Jones probably has just enough to get him in at 6. I mean he’s one of the five greatest All Blacks of all time and happens to have McCaw coming up after him.
To my mind Kaino is the best pure 6 but Jones v Kaino if both fit and ready to play? Michael Jones was just a freak of nature.
