The jolly swagman is on the beach awaiting rescue
He has been for most of his life, a traditional Labor man from a very working class background. I’ve always liked Albo, but he’s bought into the panic within the party after the election loss. He and the party are trying to cow tow to coal miners and troglodytes in QLD whuch now looks like a mistake. They had a good policy framework going into the election (albeit a pretty weal Climate Change policy) , turning back some of the Howard era middle class giveaway largesse with entirely economically sensible policies. They should have stood their ground and gone harder on climate change.
Given his election win attributed to the “quiet Australians” the abuse of Scott Morrison when he’s visited fire ravaged communities like Cobargo has been pretty extraordinary.
The penny’s dropped with a lot of the “quiet Australians”.
I detest Morrison more than even Abbott.
Tony Abbott is just a moron, a wrecker, who once he got into government on the back of the mother of all scare campaigns, hadn’t a clue what to do when PM and failed at almost every point.
Morrison is different. He is intelligent, no question. He’s a complete idealogue, in thrall to the right wing media. His problem is that he has absolutely no personality and takes any scent of criticism very badly.
But more concerning is that he hasn’t actually told us what he believes in.
He’s an evangelical Christian and presents this as as important personally, but not a big deal in a political context.
Which is bollocks. I think he’s hiding what he actually believes. He’s basically Mike Pence on steroids. I think he’s batshit crazy and thinks the rapture is about to happen and the more coal he burns, the closer it comes.
I know people who know him (including some former clients of mine who worked with him) and some are genuinely scared of him.
He honestly couldn’t give two fucks about the people who have lost over 1500 homes in this crisis. He’s genuinely more interested in implementing new legislation to ensure religious organisations can discriminate against people who aren’t like them.
Sounds like he’s a big picture guy. The world needs more of them.
No, he’s just a cunt.
What happens longer term mate? Are these fires likely to happen every year going forward?
Longer term, more days above 40c, less rain, longer droughts etc etc. It’s called Climate Change.
In April a coalition of former fire and emergency services chiefs wrote to Scott Morrison asking for a summit to be convened to discuss the upcoming fire season and what plans can be put in place. They never got an answer. Most of these people are retired with vast experience and still volunteering in their local rural fire services.
That we have had an horrendous fire season (season is now a laughable concept as it effectively lasts 9.months) shouldn’t have been a surprise, but it seems to have been a complete shock to federal and state governments.
5 million hectares have been burnt. Tomorrow is going to be terrible.
I am absolutely astonished the hill 500 metres from us hasn’t gone up yet. When it does, the aged care home opposite us is gone. About 50 houses ringing it will go instantly.
We have a buffer and if the water goes, we have 40000 litres in the pool we can use to defend against ember attack. But I’m not so foolish to think the radiant heat off a massive fire a few hundred metres from us won’t total our house. So we know at what point we’ll flee in one of the two routes (in reality one) open to us.
The forecast for tomorrow here is 44 degrees centigrade.
They won’t if
i) Fire turns the entirety of Australia to desert - sand doesn’t burn
ii) rising sea levels swallow up Australia
Otherwise they will
If he was American some lads here would be calling him “a moderate centrist”
Fuck sake Fitzy that’s a terrible head wrecking situation to be living in. I hope tomorrow is kind to you.
The worst thing is Fitzy Jnr has 6 of his mates over for a pool party, so I’ll have to endure their shit music and shenanigans while trying to keep the poor dog entertained inside.
I love you pal.
Just in case I dont get to tell you this again…
Hope it all works out.
Is there anything the locals can do in the meantime to lessen the risk? Or all the services are too stretched as it is??
Stay safe mate. In this difficult time I won’t point out the obvious that you are contributing to the drought with said pool.
You far from the coast?
I don’t see much in terms of local planning. I’ve started talking ro neighbours about what we’ll do to start coordinating some action. I used to be president of the local community organisation, but gabe up as every meeting became a Liberal party sub meeting and I was the youngest there by 30 years. People don’t give a fuck.
Hopefully we can coordinate some plan as we have a big hill full of fuel ominously overlooking us in an area the real estate agents call Valley View. As in there’s views of hills all around us.
But where are the authorities? The government? The councils? Why aren’t they working with residents to put plans in place?
In a passive aggressive way I think you just did.
We have enough solar on the roof to get through days like last Tuesay when it was 43 degrees with 2 air cons, a dishwasher and a pool pump on without taking from the grid. We have a pool, I’m not apoligizing for that.
Dunno is there much point complaining about that when you have more immediate concerns. Would ye be let work away at thinning out trees or putting in fire-breaks etc or is there a red tape scenario?
We’re about 20 mins drive from any number of beaches on this, the wonderful NSW Central Coast.
I don’t know who owns the land the hill is on. The idea around regulations preventing land clearance is a complete furphy.
