Farmer, where would you play Maxwell against Galway ?
Had debate with DB senior and he reckons midfield for his aerial prowess.
I would have him on the edge of the square for the same reason. If McCloskey can win enough ball in midfield, I can see a scenario where he would send it long to Maxwell who in turn would lay it off to Duignan who would then calmly finish to the net. If this worked twice on 24th June, I believe a Connacht Final is well within reach !!
Bit off the point db but wasn’t it a Leitrim player a few years back that was held in NYC after playing over there in the first round of the championship for making the ‘I only have a little bomb in my bag’ joke to airport officials. Who was it and how was it sorted out in the end?
I agree with db senior. I think McCloskey wouldn’t win enough ball off Bergin and Coleman to feed Maxwell inside. It’s a shame to have to move him out the field and you lose his threat inside but I think it’s something Leitrim will have to do to get a decent share of primary possession.
In fairness they were impressive enough against Mayo in Salthill raven.
Ciaran Murray was the player Bandage. I know he went back to NY for a court case. Not 100% sure how it ended but there was no custodial sentence anyway. A fine and grovelling apology I presume
Cheers db. I’d forgotten who it was but had a sneaky feeling it was Shane Canning. That lad strikes me as a complete fool so surprised it was Murray.
We have serious problems in midfield DB so I can see the sense in palying Maxwell there. However it is a robbing Peter to play Paul argument. You could in turn argue that there is no point having Maxwell in at full forward if the ball never goes into him by not winning anything in midfield.
One thing is for sure - we will get destroyed at midfield with the two current Bornacoola lads. We need someone else in there. Christy Carroll is an enormous loss. I have always like Doonan as a player but it’s unlikely that he’ll play. I heard people to say that Canning was the best young footballer in the country at his time (no kidding) but he has lost interest. There’s no doubting his ability though and maybe a game like Galway will bring the best out of him. I was in the same school as Canning, Duignan and McCloskey and to see Canning on the bench with the other two lads in midfield is sickening
Carroll is a huge loss alright but I think Leitrim people are overly worried about Bergin’s performance against Mayo. I’ve seen him play as many awful games as he has god ones. To be honest, I dont know much about Duignan but I’ve always had time for McCloskey. He gives his all and to be fair he wins his fair share of ball.
From the few times I’ve seen Doonan, I have been impressed - not many people can say they’ve scored a goal with their first touch in a match in Croke Park !!!
What is the story with Canning ? He looked a great talent a few years ago alright. By all accounts he was Mohill’s best player last year. Would you play Maxwell midfield and Canning on the edge of the square - I remember a game in Tuam where he got 2 goals, even though we went on to lose by 19 points !!
