Lads, I want to build up some strength without having to do much cardio as I don’t want to lose weight.

Any ideas?

Have you access to a gym and/or weights?

You don’t do cardio for strength anyway

No gym, have small dumbbells, that’s about it?

Bulgarian split squats

Push ups

Buy a suspension trainer on Amazon for 20 quid

Hang it off a tree and you can do

Rows
Hamstring curls

Those 4 cover main muscle groups. As you get stronger if you don’t have weights slow down the exercise, pause at bottom etc

Pick stuff up and put it back down again. Repeatedly. The heavier the better.

Cheers mate, I’d just like to work a bit on my strength. I used to be a lot heavier and with that came strength. I’m fit enough now for a 40 year old but weak as ditch water

Who’s bothering you Francis?

If you’re doing it at home a kettlebell mightn’t be the worst purchase

There is an awful lot of low hanging fruit for a man in his late 30s/early 40s. A decent set of resistance bands on Amazon would cost a bit more than €50 and would be better than buying cheap weights starting off which are shit.

I have zero expertise in this aside from personal experience so take from it what you will - my opinion would be you should look to do a mix of something involving variations of the following in a typical workout if you are looking to go from low baseline

Press and row
Pull/chin ups and swings
Hinge/squats

And then mix in 10 minutes of cardio/core at the end and build up the minutes week on week.

Any reason you don’t want to mix in a bit of cardio?

If you are going doing any form of exercise to get in shape then it is pointless if you are only doing that. 5 portions of fruit and veg a day and 7000 steps minimum a day on top of three 45 minute sessions a week and you would notice a difference in 6 to 8 weeks.

This fella puts up some decent home exercises and tips.

These yokes are absolute cruelty. I did 40 on each leg in 4 X 10 blocks there a few weeks ago as part of a circuit session. I’m still sore

Thanks for that, I get plenty of cardio running. It’s not doing anything for my strength though, particularly upper body

Get two kettlebells next time Lidl are selling them … you don’t need massive weights …a few basic exercises and you’ll notice difference very quickly …
