Long shot here, but I was out on the bike this morning, and stopped to admire the view(rest), and fell to talking with an old fella. Cycled with him for about an hour afterward, and it transpired he was a man called les west, who won the milk race twice, the tour of NI on his only attempt, and many other races. I had never heard of him before, but he was quite the big shot in his time. He was cycling a pinarello something or other which was pristine, and was still strong on the bike at 72. He beat a 17 year old dan Martin in a one day race, but informed me in a strong brummie accent that he had to attack five times to drop him.
He packed in the cycling aged 46 and started running, doing a 2:40 marathon, but told me he was always injured so, after 12 years went back vets racing which he does to this day. He was on a 70 mile round trip out of stoke.
He looked older than his 72 years, weatherbeaten really, but was, as I say, still strong on the bike in the hills.
As an aside, he confirmed the current whereabouts and circumstance of one Robert Millar.
