I heard of him this morning at about 10:53am. I previously had no knowledge whatsoever of his existence or that a fight was taking place last night.
Me neither.
But it was a ‘front page story’ on RTE news.
A prima facie demonstration of the fragmentation of our culture that an Irish boxer can be fighting for a world title in Ireland and nobody has ever heard of him.
Tim Curry
King Harald V of Norway. He’s passed away aged 89.
A cousin of the late Elizabeth II. They all seem to be cousins through one lineage or another.
Jesus wept.
I’ve a friend who’s Norwegian, she’s very upset about Harold’s passing.
People Locke Knows
A great man. Stopped the Rangers ten in a row in 1998. Shit player, mind.
Is he definitely dead? Is there a chance he could rock up in a few years working for the Salvation Army?
He’s dead alright.
They were all in bits on the news last night…
‘Twas a weak one alright but ‘twas a slow day. Like awarded……
Kind Harald was a big Tottenham fan.
King Harald V was not the sort of royal who treated football as a ceremonial hobby. He followed the sport, attended matches and took an interest in the Norwegian national team. And for roughly six decades, one English club had a special place in his heart: Tottenham Hotspur.
The story goes back to the early 1960s, when the future king was studying at Balliol College, Oxford. Harald lived in Britain from 1960 to 1962 and studied social science, history and economics. Tottenham were in one of the great periods in their history at exactly the right moment to catch the attention of a young Norwegian prince.
Spurs won the First Division in 1960/61, became the first English club to complete the league and FA Cup double in the 20th century, and then won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963. Harald’s support is generally traced to those Oxford years, when he became attached to the club during its golden era.
There was even a family twist. Harald’s father, King Olav V, was an Arsenal supporter. So the Norwegian royal household contained its own North London derby — with father on the red side and son on the white.
Harald never seemed particularly interested in hiding his preference. In 2005, when asked by VG about English football, he identified Tottenham as his favourite club. A few years later, the Norwegian royal family’s connection with Spurs was sufficiently well known that Tottenham supporters regularly referred to him as one of their most famous overseas fans.
I’d say the jittery end to last season did nothing for Har’s nerves……
65 years following Spurs wouldn’t do much for anyone’s nerves. I’m nearly up to 50 now.
The present showing wouldn’t encourage any supporters either.
0-2. No shot on target. 84 gone. No calls as yet for the Zebra’s head.

And you can’t watch a match.
I’ll probably get to watch a few as winter nights close in. You’d want a lot of time on your hands to be sitting in to watch a 5.30pm English Premier League kick off on an August Saturday afternoon.
I’ll watch Match of the Day later.
I’d agree with those sentiments with the exception of characterising 5.30 as afternoon. I would call that evening.
The dog isn’t going to walk himself.
