Michael D was wearing a magnificent tie there tonight giving his tribute to Gay.

Did you manage to get away with much?

He campaigned for gay marriage anyway

I imagine a lot of the rural posters here didn’t like him campaigning for road safety

If I remember rightly it was argued here that campaigning for road safety should be forgotten about in favour of suicide awareness

Weird how people put them up in opposition against each other

But this is the INTERNET

Hero?

Gay’s father was a World War 1 war hero.

did he kill anyone?

Probably did kill in combat. He was in the 19th Royal Hussars.

uuurgh

Gay was a bit before my time but my only real memory of him was the victim blaming of Ulrika Johnson the time she got beat up by Stan Coleymore. IIRC, it was necessary for Gay to start his show with a monologue, asking what Ulrika could have ever expected to happen if she moved around with people the calibre of Coleymore.

I think it says a lot about Byrnes modus operandi that his interviews are still recalled. Interviewers these days whether they are Ryan Tubridy, Joe Molloy, Matt Cooper etc all want to let the listener know just how well read and knowledgeable they are about their briefs. They come off as pompous and arrogant as a result. Herlihy and Byrne were old school. Its a life lesson. Maybe its sometimes better not to let on you know as much as you think you do.

2 things that irked me about Byrne though were his tendancy to speak on behalf of the whole island. The time of the queens visit he penned something along the lines of “and I think for that brief time we were all her loyal subjects”.

He was also head of road safety authority in 2006 when there was a music festival on in Stradbally and a horrific collision near junction 17 that killed 3 people (2 of the same family). The driver had fallen asleep. Gay’s comments at the time were very insensitive to the families so soon after and left a bad taste.

I remember watching the show that night in 1996 with all my family. It was when Noel Gallagher came straight from performing with Oasis at The Point to the studio (as a favour to his mammy) and the show was extended. Oh my God I’m crying my eyes out at the passage of time and people I love getting so old (cc @Tassotti, @KinvarasPassion).

At what point did the Late Late Show audience stop being comprised mainly of women in their 50s and 60s and start being comprised mainly of the tag rugby set?

Byrne at his patronising best after Gallagher sings one of the most popular songs of the time with an acoustic.

[Hands on the shoulder] Well done! well done!’

I was at that gig in the Point, Manics played support. My mother recorded Noel for me

The funeral will be in the Pro Cathedral on Friday. Maura who was Gays secretary there in RTÉ for years was on Liveline and said that Gay was a very religious man and used to go to mass in Donnybrook every day on his way to work. Maura, Roger and Joe all agreed that Gay was a lovely man
