Celebrity Deaths 2014

I enjoyed when Chris Eubank bate the head off him.

Agree 100% with both of these

Ffs. What 86 year old hasn’t had a bit of a turn.

Exactly. So you’re agreed it’s a pre-existing illness.

Hugely admirable politician and was nice to see his support for Ed Miliband. Had great disdain for New Labour and Blair in particular.

Did the stroke kill him?

You?

Banter!

A traitor to his class. A left wing nut job. He and his ilk made labour unelectable for years.

So you have to have grown up working class to be left wing in later life?
I think on issues like Ireland, gay marriage, capitalism and Iraq he took positions that were unpopular at the time but proved to be correct. Of course if cosying up to right wing media and decreasing social mobility is what is being sought then likes of Blair and Reid are what is required. If looking for genuine change then give me Benn or even Ed Muliband anyday please.

What did Tony Benn achieve apart from making Labour unelectable? Or Miliband, the millionaire lefty best known for knifing his brother? I’d have a lot more time for the likes of Alan Johnson tban toffs pretending to be lefties with Daddy’s money behind them.

Johnson voted for D Miliband in the leadership contest. Doesn’t do much for his lefty credentials but he didn’t grow up in privileged background so I suppose that’s more important. As for Benn’s achievements his role in openly supporting Sinn Fein and highlighting persecution of northern nationalists on British media was rather humongous. His leadership of Stop War Coalition has made British Gov hugely reluctant to go to war since Iraq when he organised biggest mass protest Britain has ever seen. He also launched radio one which hasn’t been too unsuccessful.

Yes, he was a complete traitor to his establishment and very wealthy class. And he wore that as a badge of honour.

Above all, he was an interesting man. Many of his tendencies were clearly to the left wing nut job section and ultimately that worked against him. Some politicians don’t necessarily have to achieve things to be successful, some have a role as a conscience, as someone who points out unpalatable truths. Benn did this well, as we believed him, he wasn’t just saying it with an agenda, he fully believed what he said. There’s very few politicians like this anywhere now, especially in the UK, forum favourite Glenda Jackson would be the only one I could think of.
