Time stood still when Ray Houghton had that chance with about eight minutes left. Still don’t know how he didn’t bury it. We battered them off the pitch that night and couldn’t win.
Cowans played for Villa under Taylor alright. Big figure in their title challenge in 89/90. I don’t think he made the squad for the World Cup though. Also played for Bari with Paul Rideout in the mid to late 80s.Also won the league and European Cup in his first spell with Villa.
Bobby Robson ; alright sort
Graham Taylor ; ditto
venables ; cunt
Hoddle ; ditto
Keegan ; bit of both
Sven ; alright sort and a fanny merchant
McClaren ; cunt
Capello ; alright sort
Hodgson ; ok
That was some header by Cas . Think platt scored for the tans . Bonner was never the same keeper when they changed the back pass rule . I remember Brady dropped him at Celtic early enough in his reign .
He skied a must score penalty over the bar in a shoot out to put them out of the FA Cup against Wimbledon that season in a fog-bound game attended by about 2,000 people.
Has two league winners medals with Everton and Arsenal though and nearly won a third with Villa. Has anybody ever won the league with three different clubs?
There was a massive change in the Villa team that nearly won the league in '93 compared to '90.
Dr Joe Venglos took over Villa after Taylor I think . The mock provies here who started following Celtic with the MON bandwagon might be interested to know he also managed Celtic at a later stage . I remember BBC showed AVFCs UEFA ties versus the German inspired Inter Milan team in late 1990 . Villa won 2-0 in brum but lost 3-0 in San Siro.
ITV showed it, actually. Cascarino missed a sitter early on in the return leg when it was still 0-0.
They got revenge four years later when Ray Houghton scored against Gianluca Pagliuca three months after he’d done the same in Giants Stadium. Villa won on penalties. That was probably the best European night of the 90s involving any English team. Pitch invasion at the end and all. Big Ron got sacked not long afterwards.
A better decision on that same day that Gordon Cowans was selected to face Eire was the decision of the Eire High Court to extradite Dessie Ellis to the UK.
Yes there was a slightly surreal situation where it was the travelling England support who were singing songs of praise of the correct decision of the Eire High Court to extradite Mr Ellis. Eire soccer types took a different view of their own High Court’s decision.
