I don’t think he ever played under Chatlton. Definitely wouldn’t have been his type of player. But actually typical of the type of talent in the Hand era.
Is that the great Patrice Battison in full view ??
Was at WC game in Sept 1981 in Rotterdam, what a night. Himself and Stapleton scored. 2-2 draw.
Played in a cup final for Brighton as well.
In fairness we were robbed in '81 for the World Cup in Spain. Hand had great players at his disposal. Feckin refs fucked us over
Lawrenson, O’Leary, Robinson, Brady, Stapleton were top top players. But then you’d have McDonagh in goals who was questionable.
Hand was a hopeless manager. That didn’t help.
How good was Lawrenson as a player? Appreciate injuries finished him in his prime but in the grand scheme of things was he as good as his reputation?
Best ever to play for Ireland that I saw . All round excellent player
The cheating fucking Belgians.
Didn’t he win the league of Ireland with a provincial club.
Top class. Very languid style. Rarely got caught out.
The Belgians cheated yes, but the ref was worse to go along with it. Think he was from Portugal.
20 mins or so of highlights here
Better than Chippy?
No. Chippy was the pick of his generation.
No need for further nominees.
Irish team that night v Belgium
- McDonagh
- Langan
- Hughton
- Martin
- Moran
- Brady
- Daly
- Stapleton
- Heighway
- Grealish
- Robinson
Were O’Leary and Lawrenson injured? Too early for McGrath and Bonner.
Not for pure skill or longevity but as an all round footballer probably better . He made Alan Hansen look better than he was and to be fair Hansen was great
Nice tribute from his former captain on ssn earlier
That was a lovely tribute. Not even the fact that some scumbag man utd supporters asking does he blame Pogba for his death underneath take away from it.
Why do you think the ref went along with it?
