Who was your favorite? Mine was Hearns, rated Hagler the best and sugar the most talented. Duran was crazy. I couldn’t warm to Leonard at all
Leonard was technically the best boxer by a mile . ,Olympic pedigree etc. He was a smart well managed chap who came from a well enough off background relatively speaking
Hagler was the most exciting boxer . Mean and utter ruthless .
Hearns seemed a character ok and a real banger .
Duran was a nutter and it must be remembered started off a lightweight
To answer your question I could pick a different one each month
I agree and I still maintain he won the Leonard fight comfortably enough.
He was most gifted by mile, multi weights and Olympic gold. Knew how to play the other side of the game too unlike Duran or Hearns.
The front page of The Evening Press the following day had a picture of Hearns laid out on the canvas. His goatee beard pointed at the sky. It was an absolute war.
You’d never see that now. Now all you get is lads pawing each other for 12 rounds.
4 of the GOATS around in the same era boxing’s golden age
Duran to his credit is probably as good a lightweight as there ever was. The fact he went up and won titles at three higher weights and boxed in 5 different decades are remarkable achievements.
The fact that he was even able to hold his own with the other three is remarkable, think he had 80 + pro fights under his belt by the time he took on the likes of Hearns and Hagler - one can only imagine if he looked after himself outside the ring. A great character and remarkable man
He’ll always be tainted by “No mas”
He will alright. A shame too because he was as gutsy as they come in his own way.
4 great boxers and all totally different - what an era. - They all went to war.
That’s a dinger of a book. An audio version with Kimballs gravelly voice would be worth it.
Kimball is now brown bread (RIP) so not going to happen .
He used to write great articles in the paper of record years ago
Poor old Toots from the Maytals gone. Had tickets to see him in June and got cancelled cos of covid. Seems he is since cancelled from here out
RIP big man.
He went toots up?
His number was called
Pat Smullen RIP
