A classic.

RIP Toto

A good man to be in the right place at the right time

Jimmy Magee maintained for years that Roberto Donadoni scored against Ireland despite the fact he actually commentated on it.

He was at the ploughing in Laois two years ago, so he sort of lost his touch in later years.

It’s disheartening how many of the major figures of the 1990 World Cup are dead.

Maradona
Beckenbauer
Brehme
Vialli
Schillaci
Benjamin Massing
Jack Charlton
Bobby Robson
Dr. Jo
Billo
Saint
Greavsie
Motty
Tony Gubba
Brian Moore
Jimmy Magee
Jimmy Hill
Terry Venables
Charles J. Haughey

At least Arnold O’Byrne is still plugging away, I think.

Didn’t he die soon afterwards?

When you look at the clusterfuck that is the ROIMNT now it’s extraordinary to think that we went into a World Cup quarter final with a punchers chance and were only beaten by a bit of ham fisted goalkeeping

We didn’t win a match to get there as well.

Italia 90 is overrated. Beating Italy in 1994 trumps anything that happened in that tournament.

You’d 2 players in that Irish team playing for one of the best club teams in the world at that time and one who had just left. The rest of the team were all more or less starting for top flight English teams and Celtic when Scotch football wasn’t altogether shite.

We should have won that World Cup.

It’s why they need to put big money into the coaching ticket in the immediate future. Get the right diaspora lads playing. Even that winger Jacob Murphy who is starting for Newcastle, he’d make a difference.

If they’re qualifying, the government are more likely to put the hand in the pocket to help the grass roots.

It’s why the bullshit that happened with Kenny and is going on now with this new fella is all wrong. It’s the most important team in the country in the biggest participant sport.

Jack was able to fuck off lads like Liam Brady who were still playing first division football.

I’d argue that 2002 was almost as good. Had we beaten the Spaniards on pelanties, we had the Koreans after that who were there for the taking, and Germany in the SF who we’d already gone toe to toe with. Brazil would have opened our holes in the final for sure. If Keane hadn’t acted the bolloc, who knows.

Beating Italy in ‘94 is one of those first round surprises that happens in every WC. Losing to Mex and dour draw with Norway before being well beaten by the Dutch. Nothing to write home about.

RIP Toto. A great friend of Laois

Dont know about that Farmer. We had the reigning Euro champions in the group in Holland, and England had been to the 86 semi finals and got to the 90 semi finals also. Probably lucky that 3 got through the group, but that was a tough pairing to have in it.

Romania were stitched up not to get to WC86, a last round 0-0 draw between England and Northern Ireland ensured both qualified, yet had England won, Romania would have qualified. Romania then got to the semi finals in WC94. They were a good side at the time.

Qualifying out of the group, getting past Romania and losing out to Italy was a good tournament. Beating Italy in 94 was flukish in that it took heroic defending, a jammy enough goal and a bit of luck. It follows on a number of finalists who have got to the final but lost to “inferior” opponents on opening day. Germany 82 v Algeria, Argentina 90 v Cameroon, Italy 94 v Ireland, Spain 2010 v Switzerland, Argentina 2022 v Saudi Arabia.
