I would have presumed a big part of the 10m paid by Celtic was because he was young and had time to improve. So to me the idea of discarding him for less within a year is really bad .
Thatās exactly it. A perfect summation Iād reckon.
Idah for me is a classic example of the mismanagement going on in recent years. We messed around in the window of January 24, a loan for Idah was sought at the 11th hour - it was completed without an option (should have been achieved for 4-5m). After a promising six months with big goals against the huns/ cup final Norwich have us by the goolies if we want to proceed. So we end up overpaying at 9m - unfair on him and fans were more expectant on really a 4/5m player. Now Idah last year hits 20 goals, largely from the bench first half of season but he wasnāt the finished product (wouldnāt have been at Celtic if he was either). If he was purchased at the right price he is still at Celtic for me today and we had a player who was more than handy to utilise
Thatās the long and short of it. If you overpay you are finished.
Idah is Hojlund just on a different scale.
The first people to know youāve overpaid are the team mates.
Itās interesting but you rarely hear anyone discuss the impact a transfer fee has on players themselves.
Not surprising tbh
Echoes of Kyogo last summer except Maeda has publicly said it while still at the club whereas it came out about Kyogo when he was subsequently sold in January. Maedaās form & even his application has fallen off appreciably since late last season.
This season will be a huge test for Rodgers now. Itās shaping up to be like the Covid season under Lennon in terms of bad atmosphere around the club, awful recruitment & players not wanting to be here. Rodgers came back probably for selfish reasons around his own legacy rather than any desire to make amends with fans about how he left the first time. So letās see if he can manage his way out of this mess & at least get the league won before he sails off into the sunset again.
It still wonāt change the malaise at boardroom/majority shareholder level & the absence of any modern/coherent strategy though. If youāre not going to buy players at the right time/age profile or show any ambition to adapt to the market & spend consistently then youāre not going to be comfortable letting the players you have leave, e.g. Maeda in this case & others before him. So you risk the current squad getting old together & the bargain basement signings not being good enough.
I think youāre being unfair on Maeda. Heās being played out of position completely.
Theyāre all just lucky to be there.
The rot looks to be well and truly set in, but a couple of good signings in the next window and it should change.
Worry is the huns making their parts fit with a new manager.
No heās not.
Heās a winger being played through the centre because thereās noone else in the centre
On top of the AICSC and trust issuing their own dumbed down statements theres been more additions to the initial signatories
He plays upfront for Japan & heās played there regularly throughout his career so itās not completely out of position. He got that glut of goals at the start of this calendar year when he moved upfront after Kyogo was sold, for example.
Heās played both on the wing & upfront this season, moving between them depending on the use of Idah, Shin & Kenny.
Heād probably benefit from having a consistent position alright but Iāve noticed his workrate hasnāt been great in a few games. His tracking back of old wasnāt apparent away to Aberdeen in particular.
Any idea what the 10 million striker the Huns signed is like? Thatās him and miovski.
No idea really. I read that heās barely played for Everton & doesnāt even have that many minutes of senior football under his belt. Seems the new huns Director of Football (Threlwell?) came from Everton & probably was behind the signing. But I guess it shows again how transfer fees have moved on. Lads with limited experience but showing potential or having good āattributesā or āprofileā are commanding 8-figure sums. Meanwhile Celtic shit themselves at the prospect of spending sums like that, especially because Idah & Engels werenāt/arenāt riproaring successes. Now Iām not saying that Celtic should take their financial cues from the huns but I was listening to a podcast going through how comparable clubs to Celtic at European level have operated this summer. For example, Feyenoord sold 4 important players for a total of c.ā¬70mn but bought 8 or 9 lads for between ā¬50mn & ā¬60mn. However, Celtic took in around ā¬25mn & spent about ā¬12mn. Fannying around bidding ā¬1.5mn-ā¬3mn for lads whose clubs are asking for ā¬6mn plus & just wasting everyoneās time.
Looks like Bobo Balde went a bit mad

Rangers havenāt even won a league game yet though? Whoās going to dethrone Celtic? Tony Bloomās Hearts?
No but the slight worry is that somewhere in the Huns is a half decent team which a half decent manager might eke out. Still, six point head start is significant.
Iāll remember that one the other night when he went clean through and skied it for a long time.
