That Leicester team had a better points tally than Man Utd’s treble winning team.
And yet people say the overall standard is higher these days
Does the winning team getting a huge points total suggest a stronger league?
I would imagine Celtic and rangers, psg or the likes have racked up huge tallies. If you’re just going off points tallies of winners surely that means a lower standard overall. In fairness it does seem the overall standard is higher but the quality of the top 5 or 6 teams and players is lower. Which is the opposite of what higher points winners would suggest! I’m confused ted.
Man Utd played the 99 season with the FA Cup in play, with replays, back before it became a diddy cup*
I think their points total has to be seen in that context
*Man Utd then contributed most to ensure it’s a diddy cup the following season
Liverpool won the league with a mere 68 points in 1979.
I think the gap between the haves & have nots has grown substantially even though a lot of these successful clubs might have had better individual teams years ago. It seems contradictory but I think it’s largely down to disparity in resources & all the ancillary stuff the biggest clubs can afford that can’t be matched by the rest, it’s essentially the marginal gains in many different areas all combining to push the onfield performance miles ahead of the domestic competition.
There’s your sport science departments, your top football coaching staff, your analysis tools, your scouting departments, your support facilities etc. When it comes to a league outside the big five (where only one or max two clubs will get into the CL), once you’re ahead of the domestic pack then you become even stronger by reaping the financial benefits of the ever increasing pot of money from European competition & your rivals get left further behind.
So the top sides in these leagues are better coached, fitter, better prepared, stronger, more organised etc. They’re just really cohesive & well drilled teams, even though man for man they might not be as talented on an individual player level as previous sides that represented the club. They’re just better equipped to dominate their domestic rivals.
I wouldn’t pay much heed to matches against Chimney sweeps and Doormat Salesmen
didnt Liverpool lose to a team from a “farmers league”
That was before three points for a win?
Yes, it would have translated to 98 points in the three points era
No. They beat the Teddy Bears 7-1
