Champions League Matchday 1 : 13-14 September 2011

3 times Ray Wilkin called that an open goal for Silva if Dzeko had laid it back. Eh, no it fucking wasnt Ray, there was a keeper and 3 defenders between him and the goal!

This is set up to be a great 10 minutes. Carlitos

Celutska has put Trabzonspor 1-0 up at Inter Milan. Not ideal for Gasperini after the thumping they took from Palermo at the weekend.

Posted the same in the Terrible Punditry thread

A fool of a man

Napoli unlucky tonight. Thouth Gargano, Campagnaro and Inler were excellent for them.

Oh the champions league group stages is so boring. United as good as through with a point against Benfica. Fergie will keep playing weakened teams and beat the other teams in the group no problem.

This deserved a

+1

Not sure Iā€™ve seen Giggs strike a ball better than that in over 20 years playing for United. Thought he had been fairly shit up until to it too. Carrick was annoying me again. Gave the ball away in very dangerous positions a couple of times by misplacing simple passes. Gave up a very good chance in the first half from one of them.

Yeah Carrick again was very poor tonight. He will probbably start on Sunday as Fletcher is still finding his feet and I dont think he could compete with Chelseas midfield. At least the likes of Young, Nani, Hernandez, Anderson and Ferdinand should be recalled. I hope Jones starts in place of Evans. He was very badly exposed for Benficas goal. Id like Jones to actually start right back as he is very dangerous going forward. To think that Smalling/Jones are ahead of the De Silvas at right back now.

I watched more Champions League highlights this morning and a few points sprung to mind:

  • Jonny Evans is pretty crap, isnā€™t he? He was goal side of Cardozo throughout the move for the goal, could see the pass being flighted over towards him too but never got close enough to put in a tackle or force him away from goal. He didnā€™t even manage to knock him off balance when shooting or anything. He didnā€™t actually make any physical contact with Cardozo. Terrible defending. Anyone remember whoā€™s been bigging up Cardozo on here for the last few years?

  • Tim Kroos seemed to have a field day for FC Bayern in Villarreal.

  • Great result for Turkish football in general and Rocko in particular.

  • That Doumbia for CSKA Moscow got two quality goals in Lille. The second one in injury time showcased pace, power and a classy finish. Heā€™s on my scouting radar now.

  • Manchester City and Napoli was thoroughly enjoyable in the first half. I didnā€™t see the second half because Jugs arrived home demanding to see his beloved Manchester United. I thought Lavezzi was class in the first half.

Ah thatā€™s a classic. Pity Shan is a more balanced character these days.

Any chance of bumping Shanā€™s meltdown before, Iā€™ve never seen it.

Scored against Inter last night

To be fair thats the way it always went going up until this season. That point in Benfica was the highlight of Uniteds time in the champions league 2011/2012.
