Brown and Ledley got some criticism on here but I thought they did their jobs well. Didn’t need to over commit and they snuffed out most potential counter attacks.

for a centre midfield playing at home against far inferior opposition in such an important game you’d expect them to at least get a stranglehold and platform…they didn’t and weren’t even close to doing it…was actually surprised with how bad they were…Brown’s old habit of getting involved in handbags with players with less ability and losing focus on the job at hand was a feature of his game again last night…you should really be expecting more from a player wit his experience at this stage…
I agree to an extent but when you have 4 attackers on the pitch, as we did, their job is to protect the defence and feed the likes of Commons, the wingers and even the full backs to push forward now. Bandage made a similar point on Brown so I may have missed some of his distractions but I thought their role was limited, didn’t change because we didn’t need to rush for goals ever, and they executed that limited role well.
@Rocko started crying at full time last night. The tears wouldn’t stop. He was crying uncontrollably.

Forster had next to nothing to do but again looked uncertain and weak when involved. Was poor on their two chances after Sammy goal and they both came after a dreadful clearance from him under no pressure.
Adam Matthews was excellent at right back. We can’t afford to not start him every big game. He was really good. Ambrose was every bit as good beside him. Defended very well, stepped up when required, stood off when that was the better option and used the ball really well. Lustig looked very composed and comfortable alongside him. Didn’t think Mulgrew started well but he played a few nice passes down the line in the second half and was never troubled defensively.

Sammy mixed the sublime with the ridiculous as be does but there was far more sublime last night. Took his goal excellently, great first touch, and his runs on the left flank in the second half particularly were always threatening. Did very well for the first goal too actually.
Commons was terrific. Always comfortable taking the ball into feet and they couldn’t mark him at all. Some strike for his goal.
Forrest was mixed. Got more joy on the left and his run and cross for the Stokes chance was excellent. Too quiet in the first half though and still making curious decisions on the ball.
Stokes illustrated his importance last night but I think he also highlighted why we will need another type of striker. He found it hard to get into the game in the first half I thought and drifted more as the game went on. That obviously worked out very well with his wonderful contribution to the third goal, but that’s his natural game more than playing as a poacher which we will need sometimes. Should have buried his volley but a great contribution overall.
Top marks for Lennon too. Good selection, risky selection at the back worked out well. Didn’t panic with the changes, and kept faith that our possession and pressure would tell eventually.[/quote]
Thought Matthews had a poor game and his final delivery was poor. He also made a hospital pass backwards to one of their players in the second half under no pressure which brought about a two-on-two situation which they failed to capitalise on. He did make some good bursts with the ball but his final ball kept letting him down. Mulgrew was a much better attacking outlet and defended competently. Agreed on Ambrose, he was good.
Don’t think there is any disguising how disappointing Brown and Ledley were last night. Thought Samaras was outstanding in the second half and along with Stokes he was the one player who looked like making something happen as the game went on and Commons struggling with a knock/fatigue.
Do we necessarily need a poacher? I don’t think so. We have enough to win games domestically and against the bigger teams we simply can’t afford to carry a guy like Hooper as we did last season.
Forster very shaky.
Mikael Lustig enjoyed the full time whistle last night:

I thought Adam Matthews was outstanding last night.
