Champions League Quarter Finals 2023

Dennis Bailey scored a hat trick against a better Manchester United team.

When Ronaldo signed for Real Madrid, they were the kingpins of Europe. While he was there they faded away into also rans. He was symbolic of a change in culture from the Del Bosque era which in a football sense was all about team towards an era of chaos and a lazy celebrity culture.

I agree with that being a mental time for Real. They famously sold their only defensively minded midfielder in Makelele and bought Beckham. That to me was the signing which showed up that it was no longer about football and about celebrity.

To me that was the transfer deal to pick on, To single out Ronaldo is very strange considering his goalscoring record and he was powerless to do anything in terms of what was going on around him.

Didnā€™t ronaldo sign in 03? They were hardly that dominant in the 90s.

Ronaldo signed in 02 after the World Cup and after Real had won the Champions League.

Real had some very sorry Champions League Exits between 2003-2010. The Arsenal one in 2006 being a classic of this genre.

He was a bad signing. He was not what they needed. Once Del Bosque was sacked the whole thing fell apart dramatically, well you can pinpoint it to the period around March 2004. There was a PSG vibe about it.

Real Madrid were demolished by Juventus in the second leg of the 2003 semi-final, and that was with Del Bosque. The cracks really appeared that night.

Itā€™s far from unheard of for great players to be bad signings. Messi was a bad signing by PSG. Ronaldo (Portugal) was a bad signing by Juventus. Goals alone arenā€™t how you determine good signings. Itā€™s how they fit into a team and advance a team. Real Madrid went backwards with Ronaldo playing for them.

Van Nistelrooy is your classic good finisher whose all-round game isnā€™t spectacular. A fancy Inzaghi.

Really good movement, a really good finisher and will score lots of goals, particularly against weaker sides. But in the biggest games against the very best teams, those players are often found lacking. No real athletic attributes, no real individual skill to beat a player dribbling-wise, lacking the first touch (and maybe the interest) to properly hold the ball up and bring other players into the game.

Someone like Icardi might fit the bill more recently, at a lower level. Tammy Abraham. Some would level the accusation at Lewandowski, but he actually is a good target man too. Others would say the same about Haaland & Lukaku but at least they both have phenomenal pace & strengthā€¦ Haalandā€™s all-round game isnā€™t bad either.

Van nistlerooy was a middle class manā€™s Lee Chapman. Henry was a different gravy. Fernando Torres at his peak was elite.

Eh they lost 4-3 on aggregate.

Anyway you havenā€™t shown in any way how Ronaldo was a bad signing by Real Madrid. Some random links to Real falling apart (which had to do with their recruitment policy, sacking Del Bosqueā€¦) Nothing to do with Ronaldo who as his goalscoring record shows performed very well.

Van Nistlerooy was up there with the best goalscorers I have seen. How well he fitted into an overall team was probably his drawback.

Jimmy FH was the classic not quite lovely but better than average striker.
Anthony Yeboah was elite.

They were whacked in the second leg. That was what got Del Bosque sacked. They got a consolation goal at the end to take the bare look off it.

Cristiano Ronaldo had an excellent goalscoring record with Juventus but was a terrible signing for the team.

Itā€™s how a player benefits the team that determines a good signing.

No arguments on the great goalscorer part. But he left all the heavy lifting to his teammates.

Bizarre logic.

One player who scored a lot for a team but overall was poor for the team

Equates to

A completely different player who scored a lot for a completely different team but overall was poor for the team.

Jose knew

Whatā€™s bizarre about it?

Good players can be bad signings.

Itā€™s perfectly logical logic.

Theyā€™d dome unbelievable battles with Barca. What a player.

Itā€™s just a bit itā€™s the top ends of a cunt thatā€™s giving the praise.

Is it still holding you together or did you have to get new parts over the years?

Jose is and always will be a winner. Heā€™s more of a man than a cunt like Ferguson.
