Champions League Round of 16

Yann Sommer has had another excellent game between the posts for Basle. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him snapped up by a big club in the summer

Another fine save from him

Inter match is not great

Brilliant again from Sommer

Not a bad aul game. Can’t help but thinking it would have been far more interesting if Man United had got through though…

FOAD

Stocker surely wins it for Basle.

Basel lead 1-0 through Stocker

What a Stocker.

Too easy you fucking ape.

‘That couldn’t have been hit more true if it had been fired from William Tell’s crossbow’ George was definitely waiting all night for that one…

What we are getting confirmation of tonight is that there is absolutely no shame for a European powerhouse in going to Basel and losing.

Bayern don’t deserve to lose this, they have dominated the game from the 25th minute onwards once they weathered a bit of early pressure from Basle. Only for a string of fine saves from Sommer they would be out of sight.

Would still fancy Bayern to progress if Scheweinstiger back in three weeks time. Alaba and Kroos have been far too passive in midfield while Gomez has had an off night up front.

Both Badstuber and Boateng have had curate eggs of performances. Have looked very comfortable and composed when defending deep and in their own box making some excellent interceptions and tackles but struggled especially early on with balls in behind and down the sides and don’t look all that great on the turn

Goal for Marseille

Marseille win in injury time as well.

Pretty negative stuff from Basle at end there with the corner. Good win for them mind. Should be a very good second leg.

And it’s the last play of the game! 1-0 Marseille FT. Goal came from a corner.

Ayew scores with a header in 93 minutę to win it for marseille

Refreshing to be able to watch such a quality game of European football as a neutral tonight. Manchester United’s absence enhances this year’s tournament on so many levels. Tremendous drama at the end with the black lad for Basel kneeing the Bayern player in the face. Great win for FCB.

That Bayern game is nicely setup now. They just can’t seem to put much form together this season at all. It was a similar enough problem last season but actually thought they were very impressive in Europe until they seemed to just get caught out at home to Inter. Schweinsteiger makes a huge difference too, though I understand Kroos was disappointing tonight in the more advanced role.

Some kick in the head for your man at the end
