Champions League - Round of 16

Is Brown suspended?

Yes for the first leg.

yeah they will have done their homework alright but the don is a smashing passer of te ball so theyd be foolish to just let him have it. i think our setup will be similar to what you describe above with two holding players and then naka and aiden looking for space more advanced both out wide and in central areas.

larry’s historically been one to make rash posts full of errors and his one from last night was no different. He’s consistently been asking for a Barca scouting report and then I deliver one that clearly states they never, under any circumstances, deviate from 4-3-3 and larry pipes up straight away asking if they always play 4-3-3. It’s questions like this that make me wonder why I scour through all these opposition videos.

Noticed that Bandage but forgot to comment on it. All the work you put in and then he doesn’t even read it properly.

I also don’t really follow larry’s suggestion of playing Aiden and Naka in front of Hartley and Donati. larry, are you suggesting a return to John Barnes’ 4-2-2-2 formation with the midfield almost like a box of 4 with no width? I think we should attack as a unit rather than designating Aiden, Naka, Jan and Skippy to carry the attacking threat and having Donati and Hartley sit. As rocko said, they’re likely to double mark our wide players so we need Donati breaking forward and offering an option inside as well as the full backs coming on the overlap. Otherwise, our lines of attack will be quite predictable and we’ll be overly reliant on Aiden and Naka. As they leave three players forward all the time we should be able to get at them if we can switch the play quickly and that’s where Donati’s passing ability will be crucial. He must get forward to receive the ball from Aiden and then play it out quickly to Naka or vice versa. It’s that way that I think we can hurt them.

Rocko advised me earlier that he forgot to book our accomodation for tomorrow night and we’re likely to be sleeping on the mean streets of Glasgow as a result.

Messi praises McGeady

Barca ace wants Bhoys winger watched

Barcelona star Lionel Messi believes Celtic’s Aiden McGeady will be the one to watch when the sides meet in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

The Liga giants travel to Scotland in what should be a keenly-contested game at Celtic Park, which can be seen live on Sky One and Sky One HD.

Although Messi is one of the best players in the world, he believes Bhoys counterpart McGeady has the ability to become a success on the continent.

Such is McGeady’s natural ability that playmaker Messi believes his Barca team-mates will need to give the winger special attention for the first leg in Scotland.

Skilful

“Aiden McGeady is a fast and skilful winger and someone I rate highly,” he told the Record Sport.

"We will have to be careful with him because his movement can be special and he has a great ability to appear in goalscoring positions out of the blue.

"I really like the way he plays football. He is a natural talent, who can create a brilliant piece of play in the blink of an eye and I can assure you our defenders will be paying very close attention to him.

“He’d be successful anywhere in Europe, but I know he likes playing for Celtic, so I’m not sure he’d leave.”

Aplogies for the error I made when reading your scouting report. Foolishly I only read the report once and didn’t reread so failed to notice your comment on formation.
As regard the above I take your point about having Donati in a position where he can sit and still break forward to receive the ball. I agree this is the correct way to go but have reservations in that he won’t be able to play both roles succesfully. Thanks for all the work you have put in doing your report Bandage. It’s detailed and informative. Only problem I would have with is the lateness of it. We should have all had our formation and how we were going to be set up sorted out weeks ago. We merely would have had to make slight personnal and tacticial adjustments at this stage. Fail to prepare …

Rafa has put his faith in Dirk Kuyt. When I look at the Inter bench and see names like Vieira, Crespo and Figo you cant fail to be impressed with them kind of options avaliable to you.

Just reading teletext there and they have Hartley down to start at right back. I think we are better to go with Caddis there and have Hartley in the centre. Do we all agree that team Strachan will go for is Boruc, Caddis, McManus, Caldwell, Naylor, Nakamura, Donati, Hartley, McGeady, JVOH, McDonald or is it just the one you would go for or both?

larry, would you believe I just logged on to post about this. I was watching a preview on Sky Sports News there and Strachan was mentioning the fact that Brown’s suspension is compensated for by the likes of Robson and Sno being available to come in. Up until then I was positive he’d have Hartley and Donati in midfield. There’s arguments against playing Caddis, primarily lack of experience, but I’d play him ahead of playing Hartley out of position. That said Hartley has done a good job before as a utility full back, none more so than at left back against Donetsk. I now have a feeling that Robson might get the nod with Hartley dropping to full back.

As for tonight, why the fook does Benitez persist in playing Kuyt ahead of Crouch? He better go and prove me wrong by scoring now seeing I just backed 'Pool.

Liverpool are really having a go at Inter.

Inter down to ten men. [SIZE=2]Materazzi sent off for two very soft yellow cards. The two offences probbably equaled one yellow card.

Why is Dirk Kuyt playing? He’s playing as a right midfielder in a 4-4-1-1. I just don’t get it.

Anything’s possible of course and it’s rare enough that we get the team completely right but I’d be surprised if Hartley started right back. Donati and Robson didn’t even play together for the 10 minutes or so at the weekend so it would be strange.

Torres should be suspended for the dive on the second one. There’s a hand on his shoulder but Materazzi takes it away then Torres knocks it forward and blatantly dives. Terrible decision and bad form from Torres.

Shite game too.

indeed, liverpool play circa 50-60 of them every year

Liverpool deserved the win overall. They outplayed Inter the whole match. Red card was cancelled out by the Vieira handball which was a penalty. I think Liverpool are in a great poistion to advance.

Dunphy is shooting down Ibrahimovic and Seria A in general.

Dunphy “The Irish team has better players than Inter Milan.” :frowning:

I still don’t get playing him as a wide midfield player but fair play to him for trying his balls off even when most of the time nothing comes off. He probably deserved his reward tonight based on pure effort alone. Inter didn’t show any ability to retain possession or string any passes together at 11 v 11 but the sending off was a ridiculous decision - I don’t think either incident, while both fouls, merited a yellow card. It was crying out for Crouch to be brought on with Cordoba and Chivu in the centre of defence and Liverpool’s second half pressure ultimately told and they deserved the win. Inter’s ambition was nil after the sending off and they’ll be sick to lose 2-0 having been 5 minutes from going back with the 0-0 they came for.

As for Dunphy, I was laughing away at him but he’s some fool:

  1. Absolutely tearing Serie A a new hole despite the fact that Milan are European Champions and Italy are World Cup holders, with their squad at the time all playing in the domestic league.

  2. Slagging off Roma and saying they’d never beat an English or Spanish side - tonight’s result…Roma 2 - 1 Real Madrid.

  3. Saying the Ireland team are a better XI than Inter and literally naming the likes of John O’Shea as being pound for pound a better player than Inter’s players.

  4. Slagging off Ibrahimovic, calling him a non-entity and saying he wouldn’t get in any of the top English or Spanish sides.

  5. Said Roma were current Italian champions when they lost 7-1 in Manchester last season. They last won Serie A in 2001.

  6. Concluded that Cordoba isn’t a good defender because ‘nobody knows who he is’.

There’s probably loads more but that’s all that immediately springs to mind.
