Cheltenham-Early thoughts

Hills prices up the rsa for 2022. Bravemansgame is 14s.

I think he’ll be odds on if he stays sound. 3 mile novice hurdle looks very poor this year.

Plus Nicholls always goes here.

Nope a hope against the Irish pair.

No chance he’s goes off odds on.

I forgot how much under pressure Quevega looked here and then Ruby standing up with 50 yards left.

I see the angle with novices in these races as very hard for handicapper to get a handle on them. I like horses that have run consistently in big handicaps. It shows that their jumping holds up in big fields and off a good pace. This is a big test for novices.

I think the Ultima is generally a UK race and is all about jockey.

I spent my morning going through the coral cup as I didn’t fancy the top of the market at all.

The obvious man to start with the coral cup is Nicky Henderson. Since 2010 he’s won it with 4 times at prices of 14/1 x 2, 28/1 and 6/1.

He’s also had horses place in that time at 8/1 x 2, 25/1 x 2, 14/1 x 3 and 18/1. A very strong record for the trainer.

He has 5 runners entered and the one I’d be very interested in would Janika who has good festival form.

He transferred to nicky in 2018 and during that season he finished 2nd in the old brown plate at the festival in 2019 off 156. He ran ok in the topham odd off 162.

In November 2019 he won easily over 2 miles in the haldon gold cup off 162 getting an rpr of 167. He ran in 2 grade one 2 mile chases after this including the tingle creek and the Clarence House and didn’t really cut the mustard.

Interestingly enough in between the two grade ones he ran in the Relkeel hurdle beaten 6 lengths by Summerville boy and finishing only 3 lengths behind roksana giving her weight. This was decent form.

He ran in the ascot chase after this and was well beaten by riders on the storm.

Hard to know with last season being called off but he turned up in ascot in January 2021 after a wind op. This was over 2 and a half and interestingly he was held up. He jumped ok and looked to blow up but I’m not sure he was in love with being held up. He did travel well tbf.

All his best runs are when he’s allowed travel just off the leaders. I think better ground will be no issue and given he’s 4 rprs over 164 for Nicky over fences you’d have to presume off 145 back hurdles if Nicky has him right he’d have a big chance here. He’s still only 8 years old and given his run style of being ridden prominently the Wednesday course could actually bring out some improvement In him.

He’s 50s on the machine so I’m not 100 percent sure he’ll run but will definitely be keeping an eye on him.

The Shunter hacks up in that

Not even sure he’s going to travel. He was very sore a few days after Kelso.

I presume there is no chance Black Tears rocks up to the Coral cup?

Has anyone looked at Umbrigado for the Plate?
