Club Championships 2010

As far as I know, JM is abroad, but even at that he didnt kick much for the past few years with injuries and the like taking their toll. Another one lacking a bit of size kafka.

Powered by several of the Clare minor team that did so well this year, he Ennis college trailed was actually by a point behind at the break, 0-9 to 0-8 at the break, but three second-half goals saw them ease to a comfortable win against a game but outclassed Thurles.

Flannan’s got off to a strong start, 0-4 to 0-0 ahead after just five minutes; corner-forwards Shane O’Donnell and Peter Duggan had one apiece, with midfielder and man-of-the-match Tony Kelly already stamping his class with a brace. Thurles hit back immediately, points from Seán Maher, Kevin Slattery and centre-forward Aidan McCormack, scorer of a phenomenal 19 points in the recent Tipperary county minor final for Thurles.

McCormack lined out at corner-forward for the Thurles Sars senior team that beat Toomevara in last Sunday’s Tipperary county semi-final and, though well defended by a Flannan’s half-back line in which team captain Stephen O’Halloran was superb, he played a major part as the Tipperary college recovered well from their poor start.

Also showing up well for Thurles were John Ryan and John Meagher, full-back and centre-back respectively. Up front wing-forward Seán Maher was an impressive figure all through, especially when moved to the 40’, and with those guys all going well, when Thurles went on a five points to nil run in the second quarter it even began to look as though a surprise was on the cards.

Thurles actually extended their lead immediately after the break, a pointed free by McCormack from half-way. Flannan’s fought back, however, got to grips with the threat of McCormack, and in the 37th minute regained the lead, a searing run right through the heart of the Thurles defence by centre-forward Cathal Doohan !that ended with a shot from close range, and a brilliant individual goal. Barely a minute later, Thurles still reeling from that one, Flannan’s did it again, this time hard-working wing-forward Conor O’Gorman with the lethal finish off a Doohan centre, making it 2-9 to 0-10. Thurles rallied, points from Seamus Kennedy and Dylan Burke putting just a goal between them again in the 40th minute (2-9 to 0-12).

The final 20 minutes were dominated by Flannan’s, however, Kelly outstanding in midfield, and his unstoppable penalty in the 46th minute after Alan O’Neill was pulled down sealed matters.

Scorers for St. Flannan’s: T Kelly 1-10 (1-0 pen, 0-8 frees, 0-1 65); C Doohan 1-2; C O’Gorman 1-0; P Duggan, S O’Donnell, M O’Leary, J Colleran, J Browne, 0-1 each.

Thurles CBS: S Maher 1-3; A McCormack 0-5 (0-3 frees, 0-1 65); K Slattery 0-2 (0-1 free); C Hammersley, D Burke, S Kennedy, 0-1 each.

Our Lady’s and Nenagh CBS advance to knockout stages
By Brendan Larkin

It was a result that didn’t look likely early on as the Clare college, with Frank Melody and Niall O’Connor outstanding in defence, dominated the exchanges to lead 1-9 to 0-8 at half-time, county minor Aaron Cunningham contributing an amazing 1-8 of that.

A stern talking to at the break had the desired effect on Our Lady’s and with centre back Tomas Hamill thundering into the game, the North Tipp school went on a scoring spree.

Liam McGrath led the charge and finished the game with 2-9, ably assisted by his cousin John, Liam Treacy and the Kennedy brothers Brian and Keith.

St. Caimin’s must now beat Charleville CBS in their remaining game to be sure of qualifying.

Another Tipperary school to make the last eight was Nenagh CBS, who crushed Kerry Colleges on a score line of 3-15 to 1-7 at Newcastle West.

Only two points separated the sides at half-time, Nenagh leading 0-9 to 1-4, Pádraig Boyle scoring the Kerry goal midway through the half.

However, it was all one way traffic on the change over as Nenagh scored 2-3 without reply by the 35th minute, the goals coming from Pádraig Shanahan and Mark Tuite, and there was going to be no surprise.

Kerry Colleges, without a number of first choice players due to late withdrawals, battled on and it took a great save by Nenagh netminder Kevin Flynn to deny Padraig Boyle a second goal.

The points flowed freely for Nenagh for most of the second-half and a third goal, a second by Pádraig Shanahan, put the seal on a workman like performance.

Fielding eight of last year’s Munster championship winning team, the Limerick men’s physical presence allied to their superb stick work had Colman’s struggling for long spells.

The Fermoy side started brightly with midfielder Mike Spillane firing them to a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after 10 minutes and they would have been further ahead had Jason Mannix not shot into the side netting after rounding the goalkeeper.

Their defence coped well with the towering figures of Brendan O’Connor and Shane Dowling and when David Mangan pointed from a line ball, St Colman’s were 0-7 to 0-4 ahead after 20 minutes.

However, as the tie progressed Árdscoil began to get a grip in defence with Declan Hannon and Martin Moroney to the fore. Shane Dowling goaled from a 20-metre free to put them ahead 1-8 to 0-8 by the break and another by Óisin Hickey after a 50-metre run had them firmly in the driving seat as they led 2-13 to 0-13 at the three-quarters stage.

Colman’s narrowed the gap with a 48th-minute goal when Mannix first timed Mike Spillane’s cross to the net, but they failed to build on that score as Carmody continued to fire over points.

The Cork side kept battling and were rewarded with a second goal by Mike Spillane from a 20-metre free, but it only served to put a more respectable look on the scoreboard.

The win guarantees Árdscoil a place in the last eight, while St. Colman’s must beat Waterford Colleges to join them in the knockout phase.

Scorers for Árdscoil Rís: M. Carmody 0-7; S. Dowling 1-2 (1-0 free); O. Hickey 1-1; J. Kelleher, B. O’Connor, J. Fitzgibbon 0-2 each; D. Hannon, , D. Moloney, J. Shanahan 0-1 each.

Scorers for St. Colman’s: M. Spillane 1-9 (1-6 frees); J. Mannix 1-1; M. Pyne, D. Mangan (free), C. Spillane, P. Roche 0-1 each.

Subs: D. Moloney for Ryan (40); J. Hannon for Carey (50); C. Keogh for O’Connor (55); K. O’Brien for Kelleher (57); D. Sheppard for Dempsey (60).

Nemo won in the Senior Football Championship down in Cork, beat the Barrs by 1-2. Kilbrittain beat Ballygarvan in the Intermediate ‘A’ final.

Two good quaility, entertaining matches, thank fuck I didn’t stay at home and watch whatever dross was on TG4. Why the fuck did they have the Mayo final on ahead of the Cork one?

The Town beat Moorefield today in the 1st round of Leinster. Craig Rogers, Barry Fitzgerald and Paul Cahillane were standouts for me, with Hugh Coughlan also putting in a decent shift as he settles into the side. Crokes in O Moore Park up next for Portlaoise. Still not convinced by The Town yet though.

De La Salle had a good win yesterday in the Waterford final…22/1 to win the A/I, 9/2 to win Munster, think I will have a cut off them…

Hangblaa, what would your thought on the matter be

Good bet alright Puke, had the experience of 2 years ago and were a fairly young team even then. Ballygunner are handy so thats an impressive result.

Sars played the league 1/4 final the other night and were awesome apparently against the Glen, who would have put alot into it. Not sure if they have the steel for Munster Club though.

Should be a good one this year with most clubs have a run at it, level playing field. Was impressed by some of the hurling in the Clare final, there really is a nice stylish way to alot of the Clare hurling at the moment, hopefully they can transfer it back to Senior IC.

I’d go for favourites in this order;

Thurles Sars
DLS
Sars of Cork
Crusheen
Killmallock

Thurles on paper look very strong but talking to a few tipp lads at the weekend they were of the opinion that complacency could well be an issue with themin Munster…

Complacency is always going to be a problem with Tipp lads, its a given. Depends who is over them really.

Would Crusheen have home advantage in a semi?

Are townies starting to dominate a bit in these? In football Kilmacud, Portlaoise, Dr Crokes, Nemo, St Galls all seem the strongest club teams at the moment, with plenty more townie county champions too. Kerry and Cork both had all urban (not to mention chic) finals.
Even in hurling Thurles and O’Loughlin Gaels would be many peoples favourites for the All Ireland with Sarsfields (not fully sure are they a city side?) in Cork and De la Salle in Waterford also strong.
Is it their huge pick that is leading these windy fancy dans to dominate so much?

Basically yes, the big clubs got themselves organised, and once that happened this was always going to happen.

Sars aren’t a city club, although they do have a very big pick.

agreed.
didnt see the IHC game as i was having the dinner but what i heard of it on C103 it sounded good.
arriived in time for the senior game allright, firstly , 18 euro to get into a county final?? WTF? and i think the covered stand was more expensive,
we assumed our positions in the city end of the uncovered stand as the strong sun put paid to the blackrock end and i must say i thoroughly enjoyed the proceedings.
i thought paul kerrigan and the bloke playing left half back were outstanding for nemo, nemo played well throughout and even tho Barrs dominated the first 20 miniutes they ended the first half 4 points down, realsitically we knew at HT there was no way back from them.
at half time i took my rage out on the poor bastard from the handball board who was going around collecting money after i had paid the 18 quid to Frank to get it to see the football game.
Nemo have a few passengers as well, Sean O Brien , former cork corner back at full forward is brutal, Niblock at midfield also is not much good.
they will take some stopping however, ithought the kerry CF was utterly shit last week and i cant see austin stacks or whoever the fuck it is beating Nemo.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a GAA person say a game was won by 1-2. they’d always say five points. Between that and the ‘centre half forward line’ and a few other things you remind me a a bit of this fella

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c29OpzjjXc0

When they beat them windy fuckers from Kilmallock they will have home advantage in the semi alright…

replying to myown post here but it just occurred to me the strength in depth nemo have.
to close out the game they were able to bring James Masters, Martin Cronin and Dylan Meighan off the bench, these are 3 former IC footballers !
a serious outfit TBF…

Their bench is very strong alright, and they have a pair of Cork Minors that weren’t used either on Sunday.

At the same time, they have Brian O’Regan at center-back. And Derek Kavanagh is fucked to the point of needing surgery. So I dunno, I have a feeling they’ll come up short against Crokes.

Turenne i must admit it was the first time id seen nemo this year but myself and my dad were shocked with how off the pace derek kvanagh was…
if he is not fit he shouldnt be playing.
has he been lining out a FB the whole campaign?,
The Barrs number 14 ( i had no program) was a speed merchant who scored a cracking goal and i was interested to see kavanagh was moved off him,
who is that lad Turenne , a decent footballer.
I ecpected more from mick shields at center back for Barrs, towards the end when they were 4 down with 4 to go i ecpected to see him make a few runs up the pitch to try to get a goal but he never ventured past the half way line at all.
Barrs were limited, Cathal macarthy looked lively on the 40, id of had Murray on earlier, great man to get a goal but i suppose ud never know he could be sent off just as well
