Ah they are a magnificent club. There’s a lot of snobbery towards them too from Hurling people in the South but they’d embarrass most Senior Club teams from the Munster and Leinster counties.
Glen just have a thing over them in the Football for now but that might be about to swing back the other way soon.
All those brilliant young lads tonight are fine Footballers too by all accounts.
There are no pubs in Slaughtneil. They drink in Maghera ie. Glen, so massive hatred between them. Years ago there was a row in Maghera town between Glen and Slaughtneil folk. It was broke up and the Slaughneil ones went into a chipper. Next thing a Glen woman stuck her head in the door and shouted, “Sure one Granny done yose you all”.
There’d be a fair bit of cross polination between the clubs though all the same with the McGuigans of Slaughtneil being first cousins of the Mulhollands and McGuckians of Glen.
And the fact the most of them all went to the same Primary School in Glen.
Slaughtneil are a proper club too. They didnt field in the 1981 Derry championship in solidarity with the Hunger strikers. That would offend a lot of the Fianna Failers and Fine not a Loters on here,
Slaughtneil are the type of club you can’t help but rally behind. Incredible story, incredible people are clearly behind it all. You’d have savage respect for those that do both codes properly. Of course there are many clubs like that but this is the club along with Loughmore that show on a national level that it can be done. Rather than the gobshites who go with the “burst every football in the parish” etc.
AFAIK they had 4 on the minor Derry panel that won last year? Great tradition clearly for a small place. I’ve had a personal soft spot always for them since bursting on the scene during those mid 2010s games (Omagh 2014 was a great memory of them)
Slaughtneil/Loughmore in an AI semi final would be a game for the people.
Only dawned on me now out of the last 8 (9 including Cushendall) teams left in the hurling they have a total of one all Ireland club title between them. Jesus that is some statistic for a 55 year old competition.
